Support Isaac's family after his bone marrow stopped producing blood cells

Takaka, Tasman

In October 2022, our 18 year old, Isaac, became dangerously unwell.

His bone marrow has stopped working properly, and is not producing haematopoietic stem cells properly. Haematopoietic stem cells produce both red blood cells and the different kinds of white blood cells that make up Isaac's immune system.

Without treatment he will not survive.

Without enough red blood cells, Isaac gets really knackered. Without enough platelets, his blood does not clot. And without enough white blood cells, he cannot fight off infections. 🏥

As a family, we need to be with him while he undergoes 12+ months of treatment in Christchurch.

Lesley has had to give up her job at the drop of a hat, in order to be with Isaac. She left home one Tuesday morning to go to work, and has not been back since. Jon is able to continue working, but there is a shortfall to meet, and additional expenses that will need covering, particularly for getting between Golden Bay and Christchurch. And Emma, Isaac's younger sister, will need to move to a new school, which is a Big Deal for a 14 year old 💔

Isaac is getting his bone marrow transplant  8 February 2023

Dear supporters, friends and family,

We are now two days into the start of Isaac's treatment; he has begun receiving chemotherapy, which is the preparatory phase before he receives his stem cell transplant. This'll happen -- all going well -- on Tuesday 14 February.

We are so thankful and grateful for the support that each one of you given to us -- thank you so much. It has helped us enormously to get to this point. We are under no illusions that there will be tough times ahead of us. Right now, we are looking to getting to "Transplant Day" -- Day Zero. After that, we have to get through the first 21 days. And then, the first 100 days. Each milestone will be an achievement.

Isaac has shown great composure, and wants to simply get on with things without a fuss being made. I still think he is coping with the situation much better than Lesley or I are.

Do let us know if you would like to stay in touch. And thank you again for all of your thoughts, your support and your best wishes.

Arohanui 💚

Jon
