Carrying Extra Weight for My Brother and Kaiapoi’s Special Needs Community
Kaiapoi, Canterbury
On November 1st, I’m taking on the Auckland Marathon with a twist—I’ll be running all 42.2 kilometers wearing a 20kg weighted vest. Every single stride, extra kilogram, and painful kilometer is dedicated to raising crucial funds for the Chris Ruth Kaiapoi Centre.
This drive is deeply personal to me. As a carer for my special needs brother, I see firsthand every day the dedication, care, and understanding required to support someone living with severe and complex disabilities. It’s a cause exceptionally close to my heart, and I know how vital dedicated support networks are for both individuals and their families.
The Chris Ruth Kaiapoi Centre does incredible work providing high-level day services and specialized care right here in our local community. They give adults with complex needs a place where they have independence, dignity, and a true sense of belonging.
Running 42.2 kilometers with 20kg on my back is going to be brutal, but the daily challenges faced by my brother and the people this Centre supports put every bit of physical discomfort into perspective.
My only brother who i am a career for goes there 3 times a week. See first hand the amazing work the Centre does for the adults in our community
Every dollar raised will go directly toward helping the Kaiapoi team continue delivering their essential care, equipment, and programs.
