Food for Women's Refuge #TwitterAunties

  • Christmas shopping!

      14 December 2014

Thank you to everyone who gave a little or a lot and helped us reach our fundraising goal. Our next hope was to raise enough to get the women and children of the refuge whanau the Christmas they deserved and would have otherwise gone without.

Together, you and us, we've done it. We are using the money over goal to make up 25 food tubs for families in refuge and those who have been there and keep in regular touch. This will be gifted to them on the day of their Xmas party this next week.

Today, we're getting in our cars and braving the storm to go out and make it happen. More happy tears, more precious smiles - that's just us. What you do for the women and children is even more amazing. Thanks. x

  • Our very first shop!

      1 October 2014

Yesterday was an honour. Four of us headed to Pak n Save. Jackie had asked the women what they would like, to which we added staples. We took up whole aisles with our trolleys. We unpacked and packed again mid-aisle as stuff spilled out. We gigged. One of us cried more than once. We broke a few eggs- my bad! We added up as we went around and when we saw we were far under budget we quickly added meat and cheese. None of us expected to be able to provide meat! We chose carefully, there was great discussion on every single item. We wanted to honour the (humble) lists the women had provided but also to make each box as fair as possible. We had set out with the intention of shopping for 5 women but by yesterday morning, there were 7 families! Thank you Lauren and Sherry for your time, patience, and muscle. The four of us managed with four trolleys but another person for the next shop would make this even easier! *hint* It took half an hour to checkout all the goods. We fumbled with boxes (we should look into a better transport option) loaded it all into cars and headed back to refuge to sort it out. I donft think any of us were prepared for the reaction. Our mission in this is to give the women and children what they need but include their preferences. I can never express the look in their eyes when they saw we had included all the specific things they had asked for. Nobody does that for them. Nobody says: gWhat you like matters to us.h This is not a long-term project for each family. Each time we do this there will likely be different women in refuge. Including a single block of chocolate speaks volumes. Jackie and I have cried many tears over your generosity. I continue to be humbled by this gift you have allowed to happen. Food is a big passion of mine and I knew it would go down well. I am still processing the excitement and gratitude I saw yesterday from all involved. Thank you x

  • First goal, smashed.

      9 August 2014

I had planned a monthly goal of $500. Jackie and I both thought this was rather on the high side but we decided to shoot for it. It was met in one hour! We cannot thank everyone enough. Thank you, dear people, for embracing this cause and teaming up. The first shop will happen next month. I was planning to do it online, but if anyone has the time to hit Pak n Save with me (to make the money go farther) please let me know. Vicky
