Please help Rebecca, our vibrant, active, mum of 3 after her shock stage 4 metastatic cancer diagnosis
Atawhai, Nelson
Last year our family was rocked by a Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis, of Rebecca, who had never been healthier or felt fitter. Despite surgery and massive efforts since, we recently discovered that the cancer has metastasised and is now Stage 4 and considered incurable. For someone as eternally positive & optimistic as Rebecca, the latest news shook her (and us all) very hard. She always strives to be the best she can be while helping others without expectation.
Despite the tough diagnosis, Rebecca's determined to help her body heal the cancer, rather than fight it. So in addition to taking a range of medications to try to slow the cancer progression, Rebecca is undertaking a wide range of complementary treatments (inc Vit C infusions, hyperbaric oxygen, acupuncture), all which come with a high cost, but which offer her the best chance of living her best life for as long as she can.
Despite her bright facade, the harsh reality of Rebecca's situation hits hard and often. Living with Stage 4 cancer is a full-time job, one she has to constantly juggle alongside being a loving Mum, wife, daughter, sister and friend. Our kids Jackson (17), Jess (12) & Maya (5) need their Mum to help them live their best lives as they move into adulthood. To imagine her not here is inconceivable.
So I am reaching out to all friends, family and caring people far & wide. We’d be incredibly grateful for anything, however small or big, and thoughts and prayers, to help contribute to Rebecca’s journey.
Rebecca is my lovely, amazing wife, without whom our family would forever be lost.
Funds will be gratefully received and will go towards the costly evidence-based complementary treatments, easing the financial burden on our family and giving Rebecca the best chance of living her life as well as she can.
HUMBLE THANKS 11 May 2023
My previous update was done in a bit of a panic. I want to now assure everyone that no funds contributed to Rebecca's wellbeing will be used for the driveway.
Everyone's kindness meant Rebecca has been able to continue ordering vital supplements and having treatments to support her body through the heavier medications. She's also bought a 2nd hand lymphaciser mini tramp which reduces her life-long risk of lymphedema, following her mastectomy. And she’s been able to have the occasional night away alone to process the enormity of everything.
Many of you will be aware of the extreme stress we've been under, quite apart from our family dealing with the realities of living with terminal cancer.
So, for 8 months now we've been parking at the bottom of our driveway and walking up & down, carrying absolutely everything by hand and using a wheelbarrow. After months of battling with our insurer IAG and EQC, the settlement was just $4k towards the estimated remediation cost of closer to $80k. EQC's refusal to see the injustice of our situation despite all aspects of our situation being covered by what the Act provides for, have resulted in many tears and huge added stress loads on us all.
We are continuing to fight EQC & IAG to get a fair settlement, but also still trying to sell our caravan and looking into getting a new mortgage so we can fund the repair needed. It has taken a huge amount of energy away from Rebecca focussing on her health, but she still tries a positive attitude (most of the time) and finds joy everyday with the kids and being in nature. She sends a big HUG and heartfelt THANKS to everyone.
