Baby Boy Born With Severe Club Foot

  • Phillip's 4th Set Of Casts

Phillip had his 4th set of casts put on at the Manukau Super Clinic on Monday the 13th of July; this week he chose red casts. His feet have been stretched a little bit more into an outward configuration and a larger amount of casting material has been used to keep his feet in this position for the week. We can now see the large dent in the back of his heels where his feet had been folded, I think as he grows it will become less noticeable. So in summary it has been a better week this week. We are due to see the specialist again next week so Phillip can be reassessed.

  • Phillip's 3rd Set Of Casts

This morning we removed Phillip's white casts so he could have a bath and get ready to go to the Manukau Super Clinic to get his 3rd set of casts put on; this time he chose purple. Our specialist and a nurse had to stretch Phillip's feet out a little bit more and hold that position while the new casts were wrapped around his legs, it was quite upsetting and possibly painful for him, but once the casts were set he seemed to settle down quite quickly. We were also updated about how many castings Phillip may need, it could be up to 8 weeks instead of 5 weeks; he gets reassessed every time he is seen. We were also shown what the boots and bar look like that he will be in after they have finished with the casting process.

We are not receiving any assistance for the costs of Phillip's care thus far. We were able to clarify with our specialist that we are not eligible for National Travel Assistance from the Ministry of Health, although we are able to apply for the disability allowance through WINZ which will be done when we go into town next week, for now I will download the forms we need to complete and take them with us next time as our specialist will have to fill out his section of the application.

Most of Phillips medical care is covered by the NZ public health system. These donations are mainly to help with our largest expense of travel costs including parking to/from his appointments which do not receive assistance to pay for

Thank you very much to everyone that has made a donation. It is greatly appreciated.

  • Phillip's 2nd Set Of Casts

Yesterday morning it was nice to be able to remove Phillip's first set of casts in order to give him his second bath in preparation for his second set of casts. We let his little legs air out a bit before moisturizing as his legs and feet were a bit dry. We then went to Manukau Super Clinic for Phillip to get his 2nd set of casts. He cried and cried while having them put on which was a little bit heartbreaking but the nurses were very supportive.

Hi there. Our son was born with two club feet and the best advice I can give, is to wear the boots and bars as instructed, once the weekly casting has finished. This is not necessarily easy at the time, but, now that our son is 7, the years of boots and bars are long forgotten (for him at least!!), and we know we have done everything we could to get the best outcome. Good luck!! 👣😍

PS Hopefully someone has told you you that a child with club feet is automatically eligible for the Child Disability Allowance, which is a fortnightly payment of around $98. From memory, there's a WINZ form to complete which a doctor needs to sign.

Hi there- I was going to say that too Victoria!

My son was also born with severe talipes of both feet, he is now two and in the boots and bar for sleeps only, his feet are perfect and he can easily walk and you would not know he ever had anything wrong. I think the "gump" comment referred to the look of the boots and bar when they are worn.

All families are eligible for the child disability allowance for at least tw years which more than covers costs of travel and parking for appointments. All hospital bills should be free. Makes sure you request your team provides the forms forthis and you can be back paid for weeks of payments.

Also there is a NZ clubfoot/talipes facebook page which provides peer/community support for families for issues as they arise (https://www.facebook.com/groups/349043865116454).

It is overwhelming at first but soon it becomes quite a manageable part of your everyday life, and certainly should not be any financial burden with the health and welfare system we have in this country. All the best!
