Help Restore the Beauty of Nature, After Heartbreaking Loss - Goughs Bay

  • Campaign Closing

Thank you everyone who supported us through the heartbreaking storm damage, it has been a crazy year and we are nearly (nearly) through the major repairs, just a few more fences to go (and a whole lot that we will forget about fixing forever).

I’m sorry I haven’t been more in touch, but it has been a whirlwind of a year, it took 5 1/2 months to get a road, and 6 or 7 months to get a working phone line. We have major power line realignments coming in the next few weeks and we hope soon to get a fencer in to help.

We have started planting and with heartfelt thanks to the Akaroa Playcentre and Meridian Energy who have donated plants and turned up to help get them in, it’s not so much about how much is achieved but how much love is shown.

We also have a brand new swimming hole, which is an incredible place to escape to and take time to admire the small natives taking root and hand weed out the gorse and other weeds.

While the amount of damage is still hard to understand, I am far past the grieving for what we lost and all the familiar places of childhood that are gone forever, and am now thrilled at a whole new world to explore without ever having to get in a car.

Spring is also helping, with the vegetable garden flourishing and my house cows giving fresh milk everyday.

While we heal the land, the land heals us. And, I have rediscovered my dream of abundance in nature, beauty for beauty’s sake, joy in the small things.

  • Native seed collection

    Thanks everyone for your support!

Today I spent a few enjoyable hours collecting native seeds. Together with Fulton Hogan we are going to ‘spray’ native seeds onto the extensive road cuttings and rammed rock.

The native seedlings when the come away will help to stabilise the rock and also to soften the very harsh cuts, that are very apparent from our house.

The seeds will be sprayed on with a slurry that will help to stick to the rock and has some additives to help the seeds start to grow.

    Let’s hope for the best.

Sorry I haven’t posted any updates for a while, life was pretty busy but now we have a road we are getting back to a bit of normal!

The photo is of mahoe, ngaio and some kaikomako.

  • Marie Haley of Goughs Bay on RNZ

In the past two days Marie Haley of Goughs Bay has been on RNZ twice, first about the road and the long road to fix it. And then about maggot farming of all things, and her personal family connection to this beautiful place and how it has been to loose her beloved forest.

  • Thanks for your support so far, an update on progress we’ve made:

We are making some progress. So far we have managed temporary fencing to protect our stream and have almost completed enough fencing to protect one of our forest reserves again. Next we have the huge amount of fencing around the other forest reserve and then the rest of the farm fencing and boundary fences to do.

We will be able to start the first of the planting soon, with some plants that I have planted from seed last winter and they will begin the land stabilisation and forest regeneration process.

Our driveway is still covered in slips and the road still a major gash in it. But these things we can cope with, beginning to protect the beauty and nature again does the most to make us feel that we are able to cope with this and that the future will be okay.

We have the first of the stream surveys beginning today which will help record the damage and prepare a plan for the future.

    Thanks again for your support.

  • Restoring Ōkururu - We've Started the Process (of starting again)

      9 January 2022

    Hi there,

Thank you so much for your donation! You give me hope to start again to protect the biodiversity and the beauty of my home in Okaruru Goughs Bay.

You can read all about it in my latest blog here: https://theseventhgeneration.org/restore-okururu/

Today I'm excited to announce that we started the stream fencing, we only managed to fence 30 meters in four hours and we estimate we have two kilometers to do, but it's a start and I was finding beautiful little native trees where the storm hadn't swept through.

In other places it's still hard to adjust to the changes and there are places on our property that I just won't go yet, like the main stream, I will give that time for me and for it to heal.

I am also finding a lot of weeds, and the long term prospect of weed control to allow natives to thrive is daunting, but it's best to stick to the positives and the little trees that will benefit from our new fencing, and the beautiful old mature trees that are still standing are what I am holding in my mind.

Please help to spread the word by sharing my givealittle page and staying in touch. I'll be sending out regular updates.

    Many thanks again,

    Marie
