Beautiful Bear needs another hip replacement.
Auckland
This is Bear, he is a 6 year old lab x hunter-way.
At 10 months old after struggling to walk and live his best puppy life he was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. Our vet said he would be here for a good time, not a long time without treatment, so a few months later he underwent a full hip replacement on his left side. This was done with the amazing help of the lovely people who donate to this site as his pet insurance wont cover us for 'hereditary conditions'
Recently he started limping and not moving at his normal hyper speed, he wasn't his usual happy self, after a set of x-rays, our naive hopes of him surviving on one replacement were crushed.
So here I am again, hoping that lightening can strike twice and we can get Bear another hip - this time for his right side.
He is the sweetest, loveliest Bear you could ever meet, he loves nothing more than cuddles with his best girl Meisha the cat, and sprinting around the house in a fit of zoomies with all his toys crammed in his mouth, but this is almost impossible for him to do right now due to the pain (though he still tries to give it a good go!)
We have been told by our vet that hip replacements are now in the ballpark of $11,000 which is a huge amount to try and get together, but this is the ideal treatment for him to give him the best mobility and a new lease on life!
The second option we've been advised of is a Femoral Head Ostectomy, this is a salvage operation where they remove the head of the femur to alleviate the painful graunching of bone on bone when there is no other option, while much cheaper at $3000 this is not the optimum surgery for a dog of his size but will allow him to live pain free for the rest of his life.
He is such a loved member of the family with a huge personality, I desperately want to try and give him the best. I would appreciate any help I can get, thank you.
He is the much loved family dog.
Money will be spent on Bears surgery, pre and post op care, anything over what we need I will donate to Paw Justice or SPCA. No question he will be having one of these 2 surgeries, funds dependent on which one.
Update on Bear 1 August 2020
Hey everyone,
Just a quick update on Bears progress.
Bear is now 10 days post surgery and progressing very well, both his vet and surgeon were very happy with the operation and his recovery so far. Stitches out on Monday!
Ill update some of his photos for anyone who wants to see his progress pictures.
Thank you again to everyone who donated, the page is now closed and hopefully Bear is painfree for the first time in his life, can't wait for the zoomies!
