Update on toilet block progress
15 October 2018Thank you all again for your generous donations.
Apologies for a very delayed update!
Alice and I left Kenya on the 20th September after a busy and exciting adventure. We are now back to the relative normality of a western culture (London).
I am pleased to say we began construction of the block of four toilets that you all donated towards. The block of toilets are located just outside of the town of Eldoret, approximately 8 hours north west of Nairobi. The school has 250 students aged from 4 to 13 all from very tough and impoverished backgrounds.
The new toilet block is a semi composting/eco toilet based on a block we saw in use at a school in Tanzania. It will replace the current pit latrine (long drop style) that is currently in use. The new toilet will bring a number of benefits including reduced odor and flies as the waste follows into septic style tanks that are separated from the block. I am happy to provide full plans/ details of the design.
We spent a week in the community constructing the below ground tanks, plumbing and base slab. It was a challenging but rewarding experience working with a local team of builders (or Fundi in Swahili) with limited English. The remainder of the work will be carried out by the local team of builders with supervision from Beyondwater global next month. We will keep you posted with pictures of the final product.
Thank you once again for your support. Having seen the poor conditions of the existing latrine, we hope this upgrade will make these kids happier and healthier!
