Help me to help myself and others.

Well, we are up to two donations now, only one more required before this cause goes public! A big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to look over this site, share it with their friends and donate. Remember, you can donate as little as $1, and every contribution will help get this off the ground. So, to share a little about the concept behind the site. Rather than a straight 'news' site (there are hundreds of thousands of other sites out there that do this already) the aim is to establish the site as a current affairs and editorial site - to try and give some perspective on the news rather than just regurgitate it. My original inspiration for running a website along these lines comes from the guys at Penny-Arcade.com. These guys set up the child's play charity, which provides toys and games for sick children at hospitals around the world - including our very own Starship hospital. I aspire that my site will establish itself and a hub for the gaming community, as well as raising awareness of mental health issues and establishing charity in this area.

Ok, so if you are reading this, I guess you have followed the facebook link. Thank you! This cause is moderated by give a little (which is part of the Telecom foundation), and now requires me to generate at least three donations in order for it to go 'public'. I hope and pray that my fine stable of family and friends can help me out at this early stage! I find it difficult to ask others for help, in almost any circumstance - undoubtedly a failing of my personality. However, I see this as a positive opportunity for me to get back on my feet and starting to lead a meaningful life that myself and my daughter can be proud of. Not to mention the opportunity to reach out and help the larger mental health community - who knows, with your help this thing could go cataclysmic! Thanks for reading, Bless!

  • What I'm aiming for.

      17 July 2013

Hi there, and thank you for checking out my cause. Here's a quick rundown of what I hope to achieve. The $2000 goal I have set is to help cover setup and administration costs for a technology/gaming news website. Initial staff will include myself, and two friends of mine who also suffer from mental illness. For two of us, this is an opportunity to make a living without reliance on welfare, so we can live with some dignity. The website will create income via traditional advertising and sponsorship from other companies. As the site grows, it will provide the opportunity for me to be independent of welfare payments, and open the door to employment for others. A major goal of the website will be to promote gaming and technology as alternate therapies for mental illness. Initially this will be by providing resources and awareness, and I envision that it will also lead to making donations of technology or gaming products to organisations dealing in mental health.

  • About me.

      17 July 2013

Since you are taking the time to consider my cause, I feel it is only fair that I share a little about myself. I am 34 years old, and have suffered from depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses for over 25 years. For most of my life, I managed my condition and led what most would consider a 'normal' life. I went to school, I developed a career and I had a family. Unfortunately, a few years ago my condition worsened. I was no longer in control. As a result I lost my family, my job and a good number of friends. Since then it has been a painfully slow process of rebuilding, breaking down, and rebuilding again. Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to find long term employment. I cannot even manage to get an interview for a simple cleaning job. I generally apply for 2-3 positions each week, scouring web based job sites and local newspapers. So I am here, asking for help, to establish myself as a web based journalist. Despite the difficulties I endure communicating verbally due to anxiety issues, I still maintain a firm grasp of the written word. I have many years of freelance journalism experience, and have had work published in magazines and various websites. With your help, I can achieve independence for myself, my peers, and eventually the greater mental health community. Your donation, no matter large or small will be put towards costs of establishing and maintaining a website, equipment ,software and establishing industry contacts. I do not seek to become rich or famous, I only want to be able to live without welfare handouts. I am grateful to you for taking the time to read this, and am thankful that sites such as givealittle.co.nz give opportunities to people like me.
