Bob's community cats vet treatment project

  • All Bob's colony kitty-cats are fixed now! :-)

      29 November 2015

I just got this update from Bob and want to say huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated money and made possible to fix all kitties in the colony Bob is looking after! :-)

    "Hi Ana,

As far as I can tell, all the strays are fixed or spayed for the time being in this area.

I must add you have really have saved 2015 for me, I was worried about the stray cats increasing in numbers.

You and your colleagues at Animal Rescue can be proud to have made such an enormous task so easy for me, also not to forget the many kind people and their donations that also made this possible. I am very humbled. One day who knows, I may be in a better financial position to help out as well. Animal Rescue Network really does make a difference. Many people are blind to the problems caused by stray animals as long as is it doesn't effect them, they don't want to know about it. I have also found that as I am involved in tending these stray animals people regard me as the problem and not the fact that I am trying to solve it. I know this by adverse comments I have heard.

One story of irresponsibility as an example goes back to Xmas 2012 when two pregnant females (identical you could hardly tell them apart) were dumped close to my place in the bush area. I know this because they were both tame and found me. One had her kittens in the local school roof and they were subsequently rescued by the SPCA, who had to call the Fire Department to get them out as they as they had got stuck in the walls of the school. However one of her kittens escaped from there, and yes, found me. That was one of the Males I captured and fixed a couple of weeks back, Zap. As for the sister, she had her kittens in the bush, which by this year turned into an extra 14 strays, with their breeding. This number has shrunk to 6 left through various means re-homing and so on. (with the help of my Neighbour). There are other similar stories I could relate.

A mention of the SPCA here, I did liaise with them regarding all the strays in my area on a couple of occasions when there was an influx in the kitten numbers, however it was the same with the SPCA and of course they were unable to accommodate any more. In discussions with them the outcome was that I would look out for these animals myself. The SPCA does a really good job and have been of great assistance in the past years. Of course in those days Animal Rescue was not about, (Established this year) I was very fortunate indeed to have been put in touch with you and a solution found to an ongoing problem.

    Kind Regards Bob"

    Update #1 from Bob!

    "Hi Ana,

I have captured two more this morning and away to Vet today.

That leaves only one Ginger Boy, 2 year old, I know he is a boy as he has not had kittens at that age. However I have not seen him around for a couple of week, so he may have vanished like a few of them do. I have Liesel the Lady across the road with a trap looking as well. So if he is still about we will eventually get him, it is a great load of my mind that I am at the end of at least fixing and spaying all the strays that I know of in the area and many thanks to all who made this possible. We have prevented with this little program so many more unwanted kittens being produced in the wild.

I may get little Squirt home today as well as she is recovering, although not completely out of the woods yet, it has been a long hard battle for her.

All I need do now is keep an eye on the health of the strays and maybe have a few of the older ones that were fixed previously and so on checked out for bad teeth and so on. But they all look pretty good. ( and of course any others that may turn up, I am sure they tell each other where the free food is)

The two cats today are BW, an old Black and White male, and Biscat, a grey speckled Female about 1 year old who may be in early stages of pregnancy. Photo's below.

    Kind Regards to all, Bob"

    Update #2

    "Hi Ana,

Further to my Email this morning.

The little female, Biscat, was in the early stages of pregnancy. Just imagine how many kittens there would have been if we had not complete this program.

Both cats from this morning home and well.

Squirt home today as well, she is strong, bossy as usual (once she got back home that is) but still a long way to go for her healing completely. Some real dedicated work has been done on her by the Mosgiel Team.

Imshi an older female I have had for 11 years is progressing from what may have been a Stroke, (also could be a tumour) I am picking a stroke as she is very overweight. Tests back on her are good for Kidney and Liver function and so on. Now on Medication fingers crossed there, we can only hope she will be ok, of course it is hard to predict outcome for her.

    Regards Bob"

An update from our wonderful Bob about the progress he is making desexing and treating his kitties!

    "Hi Ana,

    Just a quick Email.

This weeks cat capture so far, I thought it was a little ginger male, I called Golden Boy.

However had to have a name change after Vet discovered it was a young pregnant Female. She is about 1 year old. she did look too pretty to be a boy. I renamed her Yoyo, as she was always in the cat door, out the cat door, in the cat door, out the cat door. (for food of course)

Squirt still battling away and was happy to see me today, have another sick cat called Imshi, possible stroke, her chances are not good but she is getting a close look over.

Here is photo of Yoyo home from the Vet.

    Bye for now,

    Bob"

  • Squirt survived! :-)

Earlier today, Bob found out that one of his kitties Squirt was attacked by the dog.

Here is update on Bob's injured kitty and thank you to Otago SPCA and to the owner of the dog:

    "Hi Ana,

I think she will be ok. We will know more by Monday. She is in good hands. I was very worried over the last day or so when she didn't came home, I felt something was not right. I was so pleased to get the call from the SPCA, although it was not great news, at least I knew what had happened to her. I did have a sleepless sort of night and I went to the Vet to see her. I am hoping she will recover well.

She is a wee 3 year old Female Burmilla, named Squirt who strolled onto someones section to be greeted by their dog the morning of Friday the 6th . She received puncture wounds to her back end and tail, and there is a possibility of a damaged hip, but we wont know until Monday morning when it may be necessary to X-ray her. The owner of the dog (who I understand was very upset) saw this happen and to her credit persevered until she found Squirt hiding under a hedge this morning (7th) when she called the SPCA to rescue her.

As Squirt was chipped they were able to contact me right away and we proceeded to get her the required treatment at the Mosgiel Vet.

I would like to say a big thanks to the SPCA and the owner of the dog (who is not at fault) for searching and rescuing Squirt. I had actually been searching myself and was worried about her as she is never absent for more than a hour or two at the most.

    Kind regards Bob"

  • Urgent visit to the vet

      14 October 2015

Few days ago I took cat food and countdown vouchers that our generous supporters have donated to the man all of us here love so much - our wonderful Bob! :-)

When I was talking to Bob, I noticed that Bumble (cute and round ginger boy that you see on this photo) is having some issue with his eyes. Bob mentioned that Bumble has been to the vet before at some stage, but the medication so far didn't work. I suggested to take Bumble to our vet Dr Verona Mitchell for second opinion. Yesterday I received another lovely e-mail from Bob, he had to take one of his other kitties Sylvester to the clinic urgently and took Bumble as well. I will just copy and paste Bob's e-mail here for you, because it is only due to your generous support we were able to make sure that Bob's kittie-cats are well looked after! :-)

    "Hi Ana,

Just to let you know that I took to Mosgiel Vet. this morning, Sylvester a Black and White 4 year old Male ( Urinary track problem crying woefully this morning trying to go to toilet, I was very worried for him) and Bumble Ginger Burmese 11 year old (on your recommendation for his eyes) Sylvester remains at Vet for tests and Bumble on medication to see how he responds.

I am still very humble at the amount of assistance I am getting and would like to thank you once again for all the work you do. (also not forgetting the generous people with their donations who I am also grateful for)

I met Verona for the first time today, I must say what a wonderful competent young lady she really is. I certainly know my animal friends are in capable hands. They are a great team at Mosgiel. I can understand why you use their services.

    Until next report,

    Kind regards Bob"

  • A Heartfelt THANK YOU from Bob! :-)

"I am very surprised and humbled at the response the appeal has received in such a short time. I would like to sincerely thank the people for their donations and kind comments they have made and return similar comments to them. Without their generosity and kindness I would be unable to carry out the expense of the vet fixing the cats.

I have already arrange for one little lady to be fixed this week, who was found to be in the early stages of pregnancy, her name is Tuppence, a very timid little girl aged 2."

    Regards Bob
