Boston's Brave Battle

Boston is a smart, strong, kind-hearted 11-year-old with his whole life ahead of him.

On July 16, 2022 Boss was diagnosed with a rare condition called Spinal Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) This sits at C7 in his spinal cord near the base of his neck. Boston was admitted to hospital with severe chest pain caused by a bleed from ruptured blood vessels within his AVM leaving him paralysed from the waist down and with little to no strength in his left arm/hand. Neurosurgeons believe that since he has one bleed, the risk of another bleed is greater as the blood vessel walls inside the AVM can weaken over time. The results of a future bleed would likely result in quadriplegia or death.

As Boston's condition is rare and the surgery is complex, No neurosurgeons have the experience to operate on him here in New Zealand.

Thankfully, we have now started a review process with Specialist Vascular Neurosurgeons in America in the hopes they can surgically remove the AVM, providing a complete cure for his condition. Unfortunately, as health care is private in America and the treatment is specialised, the cost of surgery, postoperative care and rehabilitation required is significant.
