Boxing Day Burglary.......No one deserves this!!

  • Update From Darlene

      9 January 2019

    Hey friends,

Here’s an update on everything. With the burglary on the 26th, we have been through a range of emotions; rage, fear, grief and so on. I’m feeling in a better place now, trying to let it go. I realise some people’s houses flood, or burn down. They sometimes lose everything, including lives.

Today I heard from the constable in charge of our case. 3 people are known and wanted by the police and are on the run. They lived in a garage around the corner and that house is a gang property. We watched cars go in and out while our things were being sold. We told the police, so did others.

I have given up on expecting any of our items to be returned and to be honest, the things that can be replaced are not important. The ring, my last birthday card from my mother in law, my box of wedding photos, my hard drives and the precious memories they contain have been the biggest blows. Today’s the first day I haven’t discovered another item gone.

I feel bad for Jeremy Heard. Mostly his things were taken, things he bought with the hard work he did in Japan.

Now for the positive - friends. Too many to count individually for now. The support I have had from you has kept us afloat. The support I have had from my workplace - focusing on my team leader Kam Maihi in particular. This has been everything. I’m forever indebted to you all for being so kind in a dark time.

To keep yourself protected I would advise the following: get an alarm. Get to know your neighbors. Be aware that people knock on doors pretending to look for friends/dogs but are actually scoping your property. Upload precious photos and memories to the cloud - create a google account and dump them in. Report suspicious activity (pressure the police), but know that the police do not prioritise this kind of crime. As we had media attention I think we got a better result but I’m aware we are lucky. Pressure MP’s. I think that’s most important thing right now.

    Take care of each other.
