Briar, the Birds & Beating the Odds

$663 of $5,000 goal

Racing Kathmandu Coast to Coast to support cancer care, protect native birds, and prove that healing, for people and nature, is possible.

Christchurch, Canterbury

Hi, I’m Briar!

In two weeks time I’ll attempt to cross Aotearoa, running, biking and kayaking 244km in the Kathmandu Coast to Coast.

My “why” began just over four years ago at the ripe age of 26. I was already navigating a cancer diagnosis (and still am) when my health suddenly collapsed after a serious medical adverse event. I became seriously unwell, medically incapacitated, and was told these conditions would likely be “chronic and lifelong”.

After years of trial and error, relentless research, and support from some incredible people, I slowly found my way back to health, further than I was ever told possible. Crossing this finish line isn’t just a race. It’s to support anyone who’s been told they can’t. Proof that limits aren’t always fixed, and that healing, like nature, is possible when given the chance.

This fundraiser idea came together by chance. I bought a second-hand kayak from a Pest Free Token Trustee, logo and all, collaborating to raise funds felt obvious. Protecting New Zealands native birds and healing ecosystems mirrors my own recovery, so I thought, why not turn my pain into purpose for some organisations close to my heart.

All funds raised will be donated to:

• Cure Kids

• Look Good Feel Better

• Predator Free Muriwai

If you are in a position to donate to support my quest from coast to coast in attempt to prove what’s possible, it would mean the world to me, future generations, our native species, and to the people who will benefit from your generosity.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
