Bridget’s battle against cancer - back into the trenches she goes

$11,406 of $15,000 goal
Given by 100 generous donors in 12 weeks

Contribute to support Bridget’s battle against cancer. Back her as she goes back into the trenches of life saving surgery

Hawke's Bay, Hastings District

Six years ago Bridget underwent major surgery for a rogue bowel cancer

And then, in 2024, when a routine scan picked up a new and aggressive cancer, she underwent a year of gruelling surgeries, cancer treatments, chemotherapy and radiation

Applying herself daily through diet, athleticism, orthodox & alternative treatments, and regular psychotherapy, Bridget has defied odds and delivered outcomes her Drs dub as rare as unicorns

But after a year of remission, her recent surveillance MRI pelvis scan has shown that the cancer is back

On April 8th Bridget will be flown to CHCH where she will undergo mega pelvic exenteration

Nils, Joce and Winnie will take turns by her side for the 2 week acute recovery phase, before a much longer road to recovery stretches out ahead of our beloved Bridie

Thank you to all you beautiful people for your generous gifts, we are so immensely grateful - it really does make all the difference.

I underwent a massive 8-hour pelvic exenteration surgery on 10 April in Christchurch, which included a partial sacrectomy (removing my tailbone), abdominoperineal resection (I now have what's termed a Barbie butt and a permanent

colostomy), a bilateral salipingo-oophorectomy (removal of ovaries & fallopian tubes), and removal of other major bits like the left pelvic side wall and levator muscle - I'm becoming an anatomy/medical/oncology specialist by proxy!

Very brutal, very gruelling, with a 4-week stay in hospital (thanks to my husband, sister and mother who took it in turns to stay with me). But also, successful! The surgeons were satisfied they got clear margins, histology shows the cancer recurrence was contained, and now the hope is that I can walk away from this after a long, slow recovery.

I am home now and healing well, with amazing support from my family, friends and community, and incredible ongoing care from my local surgical and medical teams.

Here I am, a bit thinner, a bit wan, but standing!

Heartfelt appreciation to you all for creating some ease in this process and for the aroha and awhi.

Ngā mihi nui, alles liebe,

Bridie & Nils

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
