Brighten up KidzFirst Surgical for Burnt Kids
Auckland
The hardworking multi-disciplinary team at the National Burns Unit are going to have a go at running/walking/pram/crawling at Round the Bays 2024, and raising money for the kids treated through our unit.
We are all accustomed to working in 30 degree heat of Burns theatre, so the summer heat should be no problem, but will result in fierce competition of who gets the reddest face from exertion, as many of us are adept at masquerading as tomatoes while exercising. Attempts at reddest face from sunburn is discouraged, as we don't promote skin cancer and explicitly want to avoid burns in any shape or form. First across the line has to wash the car of the last across the line.
We want to raise funds for something to make clinic and hospital visits happier for our littlest patients. Our clinic rooms are quite sterile in appearance and would benefit from a child friendly paint job and decals, to entertain and distract them while visiting the hospital.
I am one of the Plastic Surgery training Registrars working in the Burns team currently at National Burns Unit in Middlemore Hospital. Our Multidisciplinary team is doing Round the Bays to fundraise for the kiddies on the Burns Unit KidzFirst ward.
Depending on how much we raise, our vision would be to not only spruce up a clinic room for when kids are seen at our twice weekly Burns clinic, but also could expand to getting cute children's PJs made for when burnt kids need to stay in hospital. Paul Baker is the lead consultant (Burn Surgeon) and will deliver the money to the KidzFirst Ward after the fund-raiser ends.

Thank you to all our supporters! After an early start to pre-caffeinate, our team walked /prammed /ran the 8.4km yesterday (despite the recent gastro/cellulitis that plagued a few of us). We cheered each other over the the finish line, gobbled up the free cookies at the end, and then cooled off when the rain unleashed at the end.
Thank you again for your kind donations, it's heart warming to see the love and care that you have for our burn kiddies, we're very excited to see how the funds will make hospital visits a bit brighter for them!
Yay thanks for your support!
