Casting Futures – Helping Rangatahi Reel In Their Potential

Casting Futures is a rangatahi-focused fishing initiative being developed through Twenty20 Sustainable Housing Trust in Hamilton.

The goal is simple: give young people access to positive outdoor experiences that build confidence, practical skills, connection and a sense of achievement.

Using a strengths-based approach, Casting Futures will give rangatahi the chance to learn fishing skills, knots and rigging, spend time on the water, catch and process kai, and build skills they can continue using long after the day is over.

For some rangatahi, opportunities like this are not always easy to access. Fishing can provide more than just a day out. It can create space for whanaungatanga, positive relationships, connection with nature, responsibility, patience and pride in achieving something for themselves.

Funds raised will help cover the costs of delivering the pilot, including the fishing experience, equipment, tackle, safety gear, kai and activity resources.

Casting Futures began as a Wintec Health and Wellbeing placement project with Twenty20, with the hope of creating something that can continue beyond the pilot and reach more rangatahi in the future.

All youth have the potential to reel in the moon when given the opportunity to cast.
