Raising funds for Waikato NICU, and a portable cardiac monitor to support the miracle babies.

Waikato

This give-a-little page aims to raise funds to allow the NICU at Waikato Hospital to purchase a portable cardiac monitor. This is our way to say thank you to a team of nurses and doctors who saved our babies, and set our family free. They do such phenomenal work there and it is the absolute least we can do for them all. The monitor will allow for constant, accurate observation of the cardiac function and oxygen saturations of these little preterm babies. This is extremely important as their little lungs are often not yet developed enough to manage breathing on their own and even the slightest changes in their breathing can result in big changes for their little bodies. The phenomenal nurses and doctors who care for these children rely on their expertise in conjunction with monitors such as these, so our aim is to make that a little bit easier by supplying them with a new monitor.

We sat and watched these monitors for hours and hours during our stay in the NICU and they proved their worth time and time again when they alarmed to alert us that our boys were struggling. Their accuracy resulted in swift effective treatment of desaturation (decrease in oxygen levels) and bradycardia (low heart rate), which for these tiny babies can be fatal.

If we can help monitor the next generation of preterm infants then we are doing our bit to give them and their families a long, loving life together.

Rebecca Clews' involvement (page creator)

We spent 6 months of 2015 in the NICU at Waikato when our identical twin boys were born at 24 weeks gestation. It was the most terrifying and heartbreaking roller coaster of our lives. We held our darling Charlie for two weeks before we had to let him go. His brother, Oliver is at home with us now and brings absolute JOY to us everyday. He continues to be fed via nasogastric tube (a tube that goes in through his nose and down into his stomach) and we have continued support from the NICU even after we have left. A piece of our heart will always be in that hospital unit, but we are so thankful everyday for the two amazing weeks we had loving Charlie and we know without a doubt that Oliver would not be with us today if it wasn't for the spectacular team in the NICU and their amazing equipment. They saved him over and over again.

You can read more about our journey on our blog Charlie and Oliver, through the link on the right.

The NICU team are a phenomenal bunch and we will give all that we can to say thank-you, but if you know anyone who has experienced prematurity, or spent time in a NICU who may also want to help the future miracle babies then please send them here!
