Chase Pinnell, a 7 year old boy who attends Bluestone School has a very rare condition, multicentric carpal tarsal osteolysis (MCTO), - just one of three in New Zealand - he has a mutated gene in his body that attacks the small bones, it started with his hands and feet, then his elbow which no longer extends, then his ulna he cant' hold his hands straight they just flop. Chase was nearly five years old when he walked for the first time, his parents thought things were looking up but they couldn't have been more wrong, Chase is now in a wheel chair and can not walk at all. Chases's condition also consists of the possibility of renal failure, and he now has glasses as he has just 5% vision in one of this eyes, his parents are unsure if this is linked or just more bad luck. Chase has started experimental treatment which is traumatic for him but this treatment will hopefully halt any further bone loss but unfortunately will not undo the the amount of damage already done. Chase has suffered so much in so many ways, with constant pain, he takes a lot of pain medication and bone pain is the norm to him.
Through everything Chase is such a happy child, he is humble and has so much compassion for others, he amazes us every day with his strength and bravery, he knows his future is unknown, but he chooses to take each day as it is. The family have been through tough times but continue on to give Chase as much normality as they can.
Chase has been upgraded to a power chair which he loves but unfortunately the family don't have the means to transport it. The cost of a mobility vehicle is beyond the family, as well as needing to make modifications to their family home so Chase can be as independent as possible.
Bluestone School, Timaru is a Yr 1-8 primary school with 485 students. We are raising funds to help one of our students, Chase, a 7 year old boy who is in a powered wheelchair, get a suitable motor vehicle to allow him to be transported.
Funds raised would be used for a mobility vehicle, Toyota Hi-Ace suitable for Chase to drive his powered chair into. The cost is $17,000.00.
