Cherie's Second Breast Cancer Diagnosis in Less Than Two Years

Just before her 40th birthday, my sister Cherie was diagnosed with ER/PR+ and HER2+ breast cancer. She underwent surgery and a lymph node biopsy, but when doctors discovered not all the cancer had been removed, she faced a second operation and axillary clearance. The surgery left her with permanent nerve damage and loss of feeling down the side of her arm.

She then endured chemotherapy, radiation and Herceptin treatment, completing treatment in February this year. We all hoped that chapter was behind her.

Earlier this year, she raised concerns about an area that worried her but was reassured there was nothing to worry about. Trusting her instincts, she pushed to have her mammogram brought forward. If she hadn't, she would still be waiting.

That mammogram led to an ultrasound and biopsies, confirming her cancer had returned.

She now has two tumours in the same breast, the largest measuring 4.9cm. It is a Grade 3 aggressive tumour, and she now faces a double mastectomy.

Because she has already had radiation, her reconstruction options are limited. The funded option would involve taking muscle and skin from her back, which will further affect her right arm. Her priority is choosing a reconstruction that supports her long-term recovery, mobility and quality of life. Unfortunately, the option best suited is not publicly funded.

Anyone who knows my sister knows her strength and generosity. We're hoping to ease the financial pressure so she can focus on healing.
