For $150 we can set free one child labourer. We want to see how many child labourers we can set free by the end of Term 2!
Bay of Plenty
Ruru Whanau (Year 5 and 6) have been learning about global issues and how we can Make Waves in the World. Our particular focus this term is Child Labour. Worldwide there are over 200 million children in bonded labour, with little hope of escape. Often this is due to crippling but unavoidable debts with exorbitant interest rates from unscrupulous money lenders.
For about $150, we can repay a family’s debt, setting their child free and giving them the chance to get an education and escape the cycle of child labour and poverty.
Ruru Whanau has a plan to help!
On Thursday morning, 30th June, we are going to head out in teams across Tauranga/Mount/Papamoa to various busy shopping areas. Each team will have a 150-link metal chain, which we will provide!
We will be selling to the public the chance to break one link of the chain for $1 with bolt cutters. Once the chain is completely destroyed, the team will have raised enough money to set free one child labourer! The money will be contributed to the World Vision ‘Born to Be Free’ child labour project.
This page is for those who don't have the opportunity to see us out on the streets, but would like to contribute.
We are involved because we are lucky to be enjoying a great education in a safe country. Many children in the world don't get this opportunity, and we want to help!
We are Year 5 and 6 students at Tahatai Coast School in Papamoa!
