Give children the opportunity to see the world as we do
Wellington
Lions Clubs New Zealand Child Mobility Foundation (CMF) supports children who suffer from Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida or similar disabilities that limit mobility, such as being unable to balance the body, unable to sit or walk, or having difficulties moving arms and hands.
To make life easier for these children, CMF offers them support by co-ordinating the supply and maintenance of devices such as the Hart Walker – a deceptively simple walking aid that transforms the child from dependent to independent, in a flash; from a life spent mainly indoors to something more closely resembling a “normal” childhood.
The Hart Walker provides hands-free mobility and allows children the opportunity to experience walking, often for the first time in their lives. It enables them to play with their brothers and sisters and friends, to take part in sports activities, to pick flowers, or to feel the wind on their backs. Health benefits can include improved circulation, respiration, digestive system, muscle control and improved balance and co-ordination. The Hart Walker costs NZ$9,850 and attracts no government funding in New Zealand and therefore relies on the generosity of us all. The difference a Hart Walker can make to a child – and their families – is priceless.
