Drinking Coffee Feeds Kids?
By Braxtyn Cordell-Hunt
A business minded student, has found a way to help parents and kids grow Herbs, Vegetables and fruit, from the home kitchen windowsill and especially in apartments and high density homes.
Mt Albert, Marist College student Braxtyn Cordell-Hunt, is building a network between homes, schools, communities and business.
The idea have proven popular that many Schools, from within New Zealand are wondering when the Fruit for Schools will expand their way.
The project is called Fruit 4 Schools Project (FFSP).Well the title speaks to schools; it is for all i.e. communities, business and parent / caregivers who are interested in recycling, nurturing plants and sharing with one another.
The Group FFS Reuse Used coffee grinds as fertilizer to keep plants moist, approximately 90,000 tonnes of garden waste is dumped in the Auckland waste centres which could be used to grown fruit for kids.
The student formed a group on Facebook after noticing limited options to connect, encourage and build a community for the project. Mr Anderson (SME) marketing company was first to get involved in developing the idea.
Being a secondary school student faces difficulty around studying, exams, sports and family life while trying to action this project, she says
“I was finding it Quiet difficult to gain corporate support myself, without being registered as a New Zealand charity, when you’ve just got $2 in your pocket.
I thought to myself there must be many other people, who are able help with establishing this project i.e. stay at home mums, small business’, large business’, large universities”.
What started as an idea, one day sitting in a café, watching the barrister make countless amounts of coffee, and then dumping the coffee grind waste has now grown into a home based business.
Schools and children will receive Boxes, with a corporate sponsored 1 ceramic or 3x bio-degradable cup, Seeds, soil used coffee grind fertilizer, plant tag, small spray bottle and instructions to grow and share.
“Kids can grow Mint, Chives, Rosemary, Thyme, vegetable & fruit seedlings from the kitchen windowsill and you do not need a large block of land to grow, as we know land available for apartments or high density housing is limited. Once the herbs are grown they can be harvested and shared with the community and at school”. Mr Anderson says.
Proceeds go to operate the project, and also providing reusable unwanted fruit net bags to the local communities who have lots of fruit trees in their back gardens to be deposited at the local schools.
[] Fruit 4 Schools Project is based in Avondale Auckland.
