Conor’s Road to Recovery

Hello, I wanted to reach out to family..I am now 76 but 3 years ago I had GBS...no precursor eg campylobacter..infection etc...I began with numb fingers then it went to my feet and started to spread up my legs and arms..saw GPs but they did not pick what it was ( not surprising as its comparatively rare) I even tried acupuncture...I finally got to Hastings Hospital where I had the good fortune to be seen in A&E by Dr Cheyenne Heka who was on the ball and suspected GBS.

To cut a long story short, I was treated within 6 hours of arrival and although I continued to go down hill for 2 days , the early treatment meant that I did not become completely paralysed but was able to walk with great difficulty and concentrated on that while in the ward..I was unable to feed myself at this stage...Thanks to my wife ..I was able to come home for a weekend after 2 weeks and that made me more determined than ever to do whatever it takes and achieve a full recovery.I had 4 weeks in the rehab ward..I am very thankful to the Physio and occupational therapists who motivated me and "forced" me to push my limits...I have recovered 98%...still have tingling in my fingertips and the soles of my feet feel a bit spongy

I believe that Conor as a young man will bounce back from this... he has a supportive family..it will be tough but I feel that just looking at him, he has the courage to take this on. THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!!!

Hi Lew,

Thank you for sharing your story about GBS, it was so new to us all in his family and we are still learning more and more about it. Really appreciate you sharing your experience about this awful disease, incredible you made such a good recovery.

We too believe Conor will make a good recovery, he is an incredible kid and so strong and determined.

Thank you for your kind message.

Very sorry to hear of Conor's health issue . I wonder has he had Covid 19 vaccines recently before he fell ill .. as this is a reported issue with the vaccine and many Drs don't like to even entertain that is that correlation . but a quick look at Medsafe adverse reaction data report #43 (google it ) shows that Guillain-Barré Syndrome has occured in 30 kiwis post vax adverse reactions, against a background rate of 238 hospitalizations' per year. Worth investigating if that is an issue . I wish Conor an his family well and hope he recovers soon .

Hi Ashley. Sorry to hear about Conor's health predicament. It must be tough for everyone concerned. Kāpiti News would like to get a story online and in the newspaper about what has been happening and highlight the Givealittle page if that is possible please?
