Conrad Pearson #104

  • 2 Months on

      22 July 2019

It's two months today (21st July) when we came face to face with Conrad's horrible crash in Wanganui, a memory we hope will fade.

Recovery is still taking place at home. With still not being able to do any physical activities that would cause his heartrate to increase, is proving to be hugely frustrating for him and challenging for mum !

We are planning a return to school with the professionals, however, this return will be limited and gradual in order to get the best result for his recovery.

Next Neurology appointment is 10th September, so until then, the situation remains much the same.

With all our hope's and prays that there has been a remarkable improvement with the torn carotid artery.

Thankyou for the lovely messages, positive quotes everyone, these have only made us stronger and help us get through each day 🙂

  • The Journey so far

      11 June 2019

We made it home for Friday and Saturday night, then unfortunately at 3am Sunday morning we were back in hospital. He has a chest infection (pneumonia), on IV antibiotics. This has improved since.

CT results yesterday have shown a bulge that has formed in the damaged artery. This has developed because the artery wall is weak in that spot. Neuro team still hopeful this will heal on it's own, just going to take time. To remain on Asprin to prevent stroke. Going to do MRI in 3mths time. Cannot give any further treatment or surgery because of other risk factors.

We are looking discharged this week.

What has felt like months in hospital it has been nearly two weeks to this date, of when this horrible, most frightening experience we have ever been through.

Conrads recovery in the past week has been remarkable.

Neurologist have said that Conrad is recovering one week ahead of himself, going from previous experience and the severity of this type of injury. They said this has come down to fitness, health and youth on his side and his will to fight.

On Friday 31st May Conrad achieved his first walking adventure out of his bed, walking out to the ward hallway and back and best of all...feeling ok and no headache !

Conrad has a slow recovery ahead of him and is likely to be off school for a couple of months yet, and any sporting event is sadly, likely to be 1 year away.

Conrad has had two bleeds in the brain which in CT scan are healing. The most concerning and still is at present, is he has torn his Carotid Artery which is one of four main major arteries going up to the brain. Over time our hope is that this will heal and Conrad will be back to being Conrad 🙂 Doctors are expecting full recovery over time 6-12 months.

Over the following week the hospital will prepare the next process of setting up rehibilaitation for Conrad to have at home whilst in the care of his mum. He will have regular weekly visits from an Occupational Therapist.

It has been quite overwhelming for us to accept and receive all the support that people have generously given on Conrads behalf, to help with his recovery, we are truly grateful for this.

We have been flooded with messages of support from all around, words cannot express how thankful we are and so blessed to have our Conrad here with us.
