Dear friends, neighbours and acquaintances of Corey Sands,
Corey Sands is a young, intelligent man who has recently suffered a life changing injury. This page is to let you know what occurred and how you can help and support the family, as they are now placed in a position where they will need to provide life long care and support for him in which they may not be able to do it alone.
Corey Sands was at a Gymnasium doing parkour when he had an unfortunate accident.
He is currently in Middlemore hospital in the spinal injury unit ICU and the outlook is that he will be in a quadriplegic for the rest of his life.
From being an energetic 18 year old to a future in a wheelchair and being unable to move any part of his body is almost impossible to comprehend for his family, friends and all those that care about him. it was a tragic accident that could have happened to anyone and it was a cruel blow to a young person just starting his life.
The school friends of Corey and others that know him have struggled to come to terms with the suddenness and long term consequences of such a simple accident and how this will impact on their lives and will continue to do so.
Corey will now have to take each day at a time and it is anticipated that there will be no improvement in his physical condition. whilst medical professionals are working on helping his body deal with the terrible injury we are relying on the friends and family of Corey to lift his spirits and provide the encouragement and motivation as he works though the impact this will have on his dreams, expectations, relationships and future employment prospects.
Corey will need all his courage to endure a future so tragically curtailed.
The family greatly appreciates and would like to thank Corey's wide circle of friends for their steadfast and practical assistance and the outpouring of sympathy the have received so far. Even those closest to Corey can not believe that a promising life could be so suddenly altered to one of almost total future reliance on care givers and family support.
Together with the emotional toll on the family there will be a financial cost that will be difficult to bear. onto if sustaining the ongoing care and rehabilitation and even meeting the day to day transitional expense like travel and time from work there will also be a need to keep the rest of the family functioning as normal. Corey is the younger of twins and has two younger brothers and two younger sisters.
To help provide the support for the family that is most needed Coreys friends have put up posters explaining the situation around his high school along with a contact to text for more information. they also will be selling blue ribbons for a donation and putting it into a bank account made for Coreys family which will be used to help out with the costs.
Corey remains at Middlemore hospital with visiting limited to family and close friends and we will keep you updated with his progress and his hopeful and eventual return to our community.
We are hoping to set up a box at reception for students wishing to donate to Corey's family and there is also a bank account open for those who wish to donate through online banking.
