Kia ora! I’m Stevie (they/them) a nonbinary performer and artist in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. I’m trying to raise funds to pay for top surgery. The current wait time to be funded for gender affirming surgeries under the NZ public health system is decades long, with 265 people currently on the list. With COVID, as we all know, the health system has been slammed—that’s why publicly-funded surgery was declined for me. The list has simply stopped accepting more people. The only way I will be able to get this surgery is through fundraising to pay for it privately.

From the age of 12 I have felt like an alien in my own body. When my chest started growing I stopped doing a lot of things—dancing, playing football to name just a few. My posture developed badly and I slowly became the hunchback of notre dame (something that, jokes aside, genuinely affects my job as a performer). I’ve now swapped out the bras and tight singlets for binders, which comes with its own health risks.

Getting this surgery will mean the absolute world to me. It will mean I can stand up straight—well, not *straight*..vertical? Perpendicular Hancox-Monk (Thelonius’ lesser known sibling). It will mean I will finally feel comfortable in my body, and who knows—maybe join a football team again!

Anything you can spare would be the absolute breast present—sorry, *best present—you could ever get me. It’s like medical philosophers NSYNC said: I wanna see them out that door, booby bye bye bye.

Use of funds

The money will be used to pay for top surgery, which is also known as bilateral gynaecomastia mastectomy, at the end of November.

If I don’t reach my target on here, the money will still go towards this surgery.

A massive thank you from meeee  1 February 2023

Hi hi everyone!

A quick update to say thank you again. I had my surgery on Nov 24th 2022; I am now pretty much fully recovered, and the happiest I've ever been. The surgery was a resounding success and I've healed extremely well with some cool as scars. You were all instrumental in me getting this surgery and I am incredibly grateful for your support and love.

Here are just a few of the things I've been enjoying over the past couple of months that I either struggled with or just couldn't do before: wearing only singlets or tshirts, swimming (and esp my swimming outfit being just board shorts!), walking with the wind blowing into me, exercising, standing up straight, and just simply being able to be more present with others. My friends have noticed that I'm a lot more myself than I've ever been — I'm way more confident, and what's more is I'm finally on the same team as my body.

That's it from me on this page! If you want to read/see a little more about what it was like for me before surgery, or about trans healthcare in Aotearoa, check out this article on Re: https://www.renews.co.nz/nzs-public-health-system-is-failing-trans-people/ And if you wanna get in touch with me at all feel free to contact me on IG (@steviehancoxmonk)!

Photo is by my friend Clémentine on their film camera (I could only ever dream of being so cool). Film is phenomenal at capturing Elvis' inner-demon.
