A while back, my brother Nick, and two similarly crazy mates, his brother-in-law, Andre, and friend, Josh, hatched a plan to cycle from Cape Reinga to Bluff, a distance of 3000kms. Nick hadn't ridden a bike for about 45 years, and came off in a big way on his first training ride!
UPDATE-Unfortunately, Andre's work commitments now mean he won't be riding the full trip, but he'll provide his brand of encouragement to Josh and Nick none-the-less.
The guys will be riding through February 2022, and are planning to cover around 100kms/ day with Josh's dad, Rodney driving their support vehicle.
As a bit of motivation to see this adventure through, they decided that it would be great to do some fundraising for my mate, Nathan, who needs some wheels of his own, so he can also get out and travel around Aotearoa.
Nathan is 22 and has Cerebral Palsy. Although he's totally reliant on others for all of the everyday things we take for granted, he is the kindest, most humble person I've ever known. Life hasn't been easy for Nathan, but he never complains and always so appreciative of the people in his life.
Having his own vehicle would open up a whole new world for Nathan, and whilst he will, hopefully, be able to get some funding from a Lottery Grant, this doesn't come close to what a good, reliable, newish van will cost.
We hope to raise around $40K, but any amount will be a big contribution towards a good van for Nathan.
Nathan is so excited and grateful that the guys have created this opportunity for him
Through my work I came to know Nathan and I have been involved in helping him tick off some goals for a few years now. I admire his strength and determination, and want him to be able to live his best life, like any other young adult.
Funds raised will be used to contribute to a wheelchair accessible van for Nathan. Funding will be available for the hoist but we hope to get him a new, or close to new, van that will last for many years.
Thankyou Everyone 13 March 2022
