Cyclone Pam devastated food, homes and NiVanuatu livelihoods. Lets help them rebuild their gardens to feed their families and earn an income

International

Cyclone Pam devastated food, homes and NiVanuatu livelihoods across the entire archapelago and Aid agencies are there providing emergency relief, food and shelter.

In the longer term the NiVanuatu will want to start providing for their families again and earn an income. We can help them reestablish their livelihoods through what they already know - subsistence farming. By providing tools, equipment and seeds we can help them rebuild their vegetable gardens almost immediately.

Vanuatu relies on subsistence farming for themselves and to sell excess produce at local markets. There is an immediate need to help them reestablish their gardens which we can do easily and cost effectively through our Vanuatu contacts across the country.

Please help us to help them establish their future sustainable food needs and income earning opportunities.

Mereana & Wayne MILLS' involvement (page creator)

My husband and I have lived in Vanuatu for almost 5 years. We started life in Vanuatu as VSA Volunteers working in Judicial services and NiVanuatu Business Development.

We have established strong relationships with NiVanuatu friends and family and we are devastated and heartbroken on what Cyclone Pam has left in her wake.

We are compelled to help rebuild and we will do that effectively in a small way. Help us provide a long-term benefit to NiVanuatu to help themselves.

WOW! So, so grateful for your support.  9 June 2015

This last post has been a little late in coming as we have been busy working with one of the school to create a school class lesson on how seeds grow, followed with a mass planting of vegetables in their school garden. Each student also received a sticker for their enthusiasm.

When we started this idea of fundraising we were not sure how it would all go, and if people were that interested in giving to a country that many don't know about. But seeing the destruction that TC Pam caused was a strong reason for us to continue with the idea. We have been so very humbled by your generosity to the project, and some still continue to do so through other means.

The work being undertaken in schools has been really well received and we are slowly expanding the number of schools that we are working with. To date we have actively worked with 3 schools with more than 3000 students in total. We will be expanding that number very shortly. Recently the Minister of Lands announced that state owned land can be made available to schools on application for extensions of their gardens. So that is a positive move.

Due to the nature of this project we have a local corporate sponsor wanting to contribute to the project which is another exciting development and reassurance that we are doing a good, worthwhile job.

Finally, we'd like to again express our gratitude for your generosity and your support for the idea. The recipients of that generosity are so grateful and will continue in the long term to do a better job of supporting students and parents through their vegetable gardens feeding the students.
