Goal change
16 August 2016After Judge Binnie recommended that David Bain should receive compensation, opinion polls showed that 60 to 70% of New Zealanders supported that conclusion. David recently received $925,000 on the condition that he agreed not to pursue further legal action. The government made it clear that this was not to be seen as compensation.
However, the public seems to believe David has been compensated and my hope that we might have raised $1 million for him now looks overly optimistic. With this in mind, I have decided to remove a fixed goal and make it an 'open' one.

Isn't that against GAL rules? Your goal was $1 million and if it doesn't reach that, donations are meant to be given back aren't they? Are you allowed to change the terms?

Hi Ronnie,
Tom from Givealittle here - we have 2 ways for donors to contribute to a fundraiser's target.
Firstly, pledges - which count towards a total goal, such that once that goal is met all pledges are committed. If the goal isn't met, the pledges don't convert. Pledge based fundraising must have a goal assigned.
Secondly, donations - where the contribution is given to the fundraiser regardless of the total raised. In most donation based causes, fundraisers don't set a goal - it is very often a case of 'every dollar counts'. Similarly, if the fundraiser does set a goal, then it is not mandatory to hit that goal in order to receive donations.
Finally, requesting a change to the amount of a goal, or to change the target to open, for donation based causes is within our Terms. We generally won't allow more than 1 or 2 changes, and we assess each request for this change on its merits. In this case, we are happy that there are no issues in making this change.
(To be clear, we don't allow changes in targets for pledge based causes)
