Representing NZ at the 24-Hour World Championships

  • You can't always get what you want

So. Two weeks on, and two fewer toe nails. It was amazing to be at a World Championships again, and a pleasure to co-captain our awesome NZ team. It felt like preparation had been really good, and I was cautiously optimistic. Albi is a beautiful place to spend time.

Unfortunately, things just didn't come together for me on the day. I got sick earlier than expected (from 6 hours) and went downhill from there, in a frustrating echo of my 2019 experience, unable to hold anything. Both Viv and I were in medical for a lot of the night, and then only allowed to walk.

What went wrong? I'm still working on that. It was warm, though not ridiculously so, but I was slowing down, taking walk breaks, and using ice and water where possible. I've had nausea before, but can usually regroup after a break to some extent (as I did in Auckland in May, and still got a reasonable total). I had a plan from a nutritionist I'd worked with for several months. I'd trained with more consistency than other races and tapered well. Crew were great.

I have since found out I was deficient in iron, due to fun perimenopause activities, and will be getting an infusion soon. This could have some bearing on the issues but probably isn't the whole story either. I'd hoped to smash it, for myself and for the NZ vest, but that will have to wait. C'est la vie!

I really appreciate the support from you all in terms of getting to this event - it really makes a big difference. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa!

  • Three weeks to go!

Time is flying, and I head off to the France via the UK, on October 11th. Before that is the small matter of packing, tapering, and enjoying a lap at the National Road Relays with Hamilton City Hawks. It's been a full month on all fronts, but training has gone reasonably well overall. I enjoyed running from Karapiro to Ngaruawahia along Te Awa River Ride, and various Hauraki Rail Trail jaunts. At the moment I'm feeling a bit tired and niggly, as you do, but trusting energy should pick up soon.

The Let's Get Loopy fundraising event was great fun. It was fantastic to see people come along to clock up some laps and have a chat en route. Te Huia (pictured) ran 50k and made it look easy. Thanks again to all the sponsors for the event - Trek'n'Travel, Davy Engravers (limited edition medal!), Curranz, Connect Health and my teammate Sue.

And of course to all of you for supporting this mission! As a small thank you, enjoy a few free PDFs (previous books + a cartoon run planner) here: https://tinyurl.com/dawnpdfs - you rock! (I meant to put that link in an auto-email when setting up, but think it went rogue).

    On y va - let's go!

  • Loopy run this weekend + updates

A small update: training is going reasonably well. Feeling very lucky to have you all supporting the adventure!

I made a bit of a rookie error giving blood just ahead of the weekend's running and felt pretty flat, but hopefully stores will replenish quickly (perhaps some future recipient will develop an unexpected predilection for running in circles.)

This coming weekend is the 'Let's get Loopy' event, which I'm looking forward to. I'll be circling Lake D for a good chunk of Saturday, and look forward to seeing some of you there. There will be spot prizes drawn, thanks to some awesome sponsors (Trek'n'travel, Curranz, Pure, and Connect Health). Medals by Davy's Engravers! These are open to anyone in NZ who registers.

Our NZ uniform arrived yesterday, which is exciting! When I first represented NZ 7 years ago I got my daughter to take a photo of me modelling it on the trampoline, so we recreated that this time too.
