Help me fight for fair and challenge Auckland Council!
Auckland
Hi, I’m Cindy, and I’m asking for help to fund legal support after being denied access to Auckland Council’s flood buyout scheme.
In August 2023, I finally bought my first home! This was a huge achievement for me. The house had been lightly flooded during Cyclone Gabrielle, but with insurance and finance approved, I felt confident moving ahead.
After moving in, I spent months renovating, I poured everything I had into my home, building a future I was proud of.
After learning about the Council Buyout Scheme in July 2024 (from my neighbours, not Council), I applied. In March 2025, my property was classified as Category 3 — the same as many of my neighbours. But a few weeks later, Council reversed the decision. They told me I was not eligible — not because the risk had changed, but because I bought the property after the flood.
Now my home is a Cat1, but the LIM report will still carry that history. Insurance and resale value are negatively affected. But I don’t qualify for help — purely because of when I bought it. I did everything right. I bought in good faith. I’ve been let down by the system.
I’ve sought legal advice, and have been told I have a strong case. There are serious questions around disclosure, accountability, and Council’s changing position.
I’m fundraising to help cover legal costs which are beyond what I can manage, to challenge this decision and stand up for what’s fair.
If you’re able to donate or share my story, I would be so incredibly grateful.
– Cindy
