DeMolen, Dutch Windmill Foxton: Maintenance project
Foxton, Manawatu-Wanganui
De Molen has proudly stood as a Beacon in Foxton since 2003.
While it is a symbol of Dutch Heritage, it also is a symbol of how community and cultures joined together to build an iconic working “Heritage” building.
The Vision of our community took 13 years to turn into a reality through the determination of a group of volunteers knowing what this Molen could bring for our small community.
De Molen has operated for 23 years as a fully operating, flour producing Mill staffed by volunteers. The Trust now also employs 15 full time staff.
We host tours, from schools, social groups and tourists both international and local.
The Mill creates a positive impact for our local business and tourist community, a connection for Dutch culture and teachings in engineering, food and history.
Maintenance is necessary from time to time to ensure this Molen will continue to operate beyond the next 300 years, as the Mill is designed to do.
With the VERY salt laden winds of Foxton, parts of the mill require attention sooner than expected. The Trust is faced with major external work, replacement of the lattice sails, rust removal and protection and painting of highly exposed wooden areas, bird faeces protection and upgrade of exterior lighting.
Lotteries NZ has kindly donated $25,000 to assist with some of the repairs and the Foxton Windmill trust will contribute another $25,000 however we will still require $26,000 to complete this project.
We will use locally owned contractors to complete the work.
Opened in 2003, The Foxton Windmill Trust owns and operates, De Molen (The Mill), an authentic, fully working replica of a 17th century Dutch Flour Mill. The trust is charged with maintaining and operating de Molen with volunteer and employed staff operating the mill and associated Dutch fusion, Cafe de Molen.
De Molen is the beating heart of tourism in Horowhenua.
Funds will be spent on new sails, painting, rust prevention, bird protection and updating outside lighting of the windmill.
