Supporting a family during disaster.
Napier, Hawke's Bay
In the early hours of February 14th my Sister Danelle, brother in law Josh and my 3 nephews, Finn (7) Reeve (5) and Dawson (2) had their world flipped upside down by Cyclone Gabrielle.
At 4:30am they were in their garage ontop of a table in the dark fearing for their lives as water rose quick and fast towards them. They couldn't leave the property because they woke up to the water at their door. With no one able to get in they had to smash their back fence down to get to safety at neighboring properties that sat higher. With a broken toe from getting to safety they grabbed what they could save and hold.
Being trapped till the following late afternoon they walked out on foot. The kids in underwear, 1 shoe and barefoot from losing things in the water, they got to safety leaving behind their beautiful family home, vehicles and their belongings. Their home is literally in silt and debre with precious memories and hard work destroyed.
We are so grateful to have them alive and with us still, but I have been inundated with kind human beings wanting to support and help Danelle, Josh and the boys in anyway they can. If you are in a position to donate, will be greatly appreciated for them to start rebuilding their belongings and feel as comfortable as possible losing their home and comforts amongst the trauma they've just endured and the anxiety that comes with that. They have insurance on their home but believe contents won't cover the required amount needed.
I am Danelles little sister
