A festival celebrating the achievements & abilities of disabled people - to show "disability is not inability".
Auckland
Abilities 256 is a disability festival that will highlight the talents, abilities and skills of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Uganda. Abilities 256 will be promoted by Disability Support Uganda, a grassroots organisation run by PWDs for PWDs. Abilities 256 will showcase the contribution that PWDs make to the social, cultural and economic life of the community in the following events and demonstrations:
• Dance
• Singing
• Sport
• Arts and crafts
• Master trades
• Education, knowledge and experience
As you may understand PWDs face stigma and prejudice every day. PWDs are some of the most impoverished and marginalised people in Uganda. It is hoped that through showcasing the talents and abilities of PWDs the people of Uganda will come to value and appreciate the valuable contribution PWDs make to the community, society and economy. Money raised by this project will go towards the following:
• Travel funds to subsidize PWDs that attend
• Hiring buses cars and taxis to transport groups to the festival
• A workshop to educate PWDs on an important issue
• Refreshments for all PWDs
• PA system
• Money towards costs of the venue
The motto of Disability Support Uganda is: "Though we have disabilities we will find a way."
Please help to make this event a success.
I was asked by the President of Disability Support Uganda to write a blog about issues faced by Persons with Disabilities in Uganda.
I have been friends with DiSU President Jacqueline Atugonza for more than 10 years. During that time she has impressed me as an honest hard working person.
I know she will make your donation count.
