Dog squashed by horse

  • Sad news of losing our girl Gucci

      4 December 2023

It breaks my heart to share the devastating news of Gucci sadly being put to sleep on the 29th of November 2023.

Our little darling Gucci was doing fantastic, her surgery all went amazing, she was home happy & resting, able to go to the toilet, learning to walk and weight bare weight very lightly etc! She had her weekly vet check just days before passing with flying colours. Great movement and progress. She was over all so happy to be home with us! When on the 28th late evening she was sleeping and went into major pain yelping out of nowhere, we managed to get her through the night and took her into the vets the following morning for X-rays and sedation as I knew something wasn’t quite right with her. We received some horrible and devastating news. 2 of the screws in the plate putting her pelvis back together had snapped. Yes two solid screws inside of her had snapped! She was in such restricted crate rest, pelvis support going toilet and doing amazing at home. There was no explanation as to why two of the longest screws had snapped in two totally different places. There was no way two screws inside of her should just give way and snap when she was fast asleep! She was in so much pain, so much worse than the injury when it first happened with the horse squashing her. There wasn’t much of an option to do surgery again with very little bone left to put screws into. Having these screws fail costed our special dogs life. She fought so hard and we wish we had a better outcome.

Hi everyone, our little girl Gucci arrived home yesterday afternoon. She’s so happy to be home with her family, enjoying some cuddles with the girls and seeing us around. She’s mostly on crate rest and having lots of help to hold her pelvis area up for when she goes outside to the toilet. She still currently can’t walk but hopefully over time after her crate rest she will improve and her brain will be able to signal to her left hind side to work correctly. We’re so proud with her progress so far and can’t wait to see how much she improves over the coming weeks - months. A long road ahead but we’ve got this Gucci!!

  • Toilet update & headed in for surgery

Hi everyone, just a quick little update on Gucci. We have popped in to see her a few times today, she is looking a bit more comfortable and happier but on some very strong pain meds to keep the pain down. Some great news is that she passed urine over night, woohoo, yay!! It was such a relief as we were unsure if she may have bladder issues having had a lot of trauma around that area but she seems to be managing to hold on and pass urine at this stage. She is currently in orthopedic surgery with the awesome team at Town & Country Vets, Richmond. Our safest choices with the best outcome were to put her through surgery today hoping that everything goes ok and she will recover with lots of crate rest, a dog wheelchair/walker on hand to use if needed, to keep on fighting through this and hope for a great outcome or to say our goodbyes. It breaks my heart to have to be in this situation and make this choice. Our two girls have been very upset with both having trouble to sleep and a lot of tears often. I’m never one to give up without fighting as hard as we can so we will keep on getting through this, she’s a little, strong, healthy trooper and she’s got this!!

Thank you to all the donations & shares of her givealittle page, you are all making this possible for her and our family 🙏

This morning I was able to see Guccis x-rays, it confirmed how important to us that we get her in for orthopaedic surgery to put her pelvis back together with plates to hold in place and give her a chance to be a normal dog again, without this surgery she won’t be able to toilet properly or walk…

I just want to say a massive thank you to all the generous donations. It breaks our heart to see our little fluff ball battling but we are hoping she can get through this!! She’s a tough wee girl.
