Auckland

A message from Maia & Awatea, our centre manager & women’s services coordinator, 19 September 2024:

Happy Suffrage Day! Today and every day, we celebrate iconic activists Kate Sheppard and Meri Te Tai Mangakāhia, and all feminists who fought so hard for our right to vote. We honour their relentless dedication – by ourselves continuing the push for women’s rights and to make Aotearoa a safer and more equitable place.

This Suffrage Day, we invite you to “Donate a Kate”— the $10 banknote featuring Kate Sheppard— regularly or as a one-off, to support us in this work:

• Standing up publicly for the rights of women, trans people and whānau Māori

• Sharing community kōrero irl & online with Stacey Morrison, starring wāhine Māori thought leaders like Margaret Mutu and Tayi Tibble

• Non-judgemental low-cost counselling and free crisis support & referral

• Creative, life-skills and self-defence workshops

• Advocating for vital systems change like pay equity

Be part of the change and donate a Kate! Or several – all at once, or one-at-a-time ongoing! We are proudly independent, enabling us to speak truth to power.

About us

Use of funds

All "Kates" will go towards Auckland Women's Centre's brief crisis support service, providing free non-judgemental advice, information and referral for all women.
