Dunedin Mosque Fundraising Appeal

The horrific events in Christchurch on the 15th March of 2019 has shocked and shaken us to the core of our being. We are heartbroken and continue to struggle with unbearable grief, loss and fear. The endless aroha, unity and compassion from our Dunedin whanau is helping to slowly heal our hearts. We Kiwis have become a global beacon of hope and humanity. We are showing the world how a nation can and should stand united against hatred and terrorism.

We have been approached by many in our community as to how they can help the Muslims in Dunedin. For the Dunedin community, it has been frightening to know that we were the original target of the terrorist attack. This has left the community absolutely shaken. With the recent addition of many refugee families over the past three years, the community has grown exponentially. Unfortunately, our mosque, Al Huda mosque, at present is not able to safely accommodate our large community for congregational gatherings such as the Friday prayer due to a significant lack of space. In addition to a shortage of physical space, we currently do not have enough exit points and have no accessible windows in the halls, should it be required in an event of an emergency. If the tragic incident had happened in Dunedin, the number of casualties would have been significant.

With your gestures of aroha and compassion in mind, we ask for your continued support. We have created a ‘give a little’ fundraising campaign for the redevelopment of the Al Huda mosque in Dunedin, New Zealand. It is a sincere request to our brothers and sisters in the wider community to help upgrade our current facility so our mosque is a safe place of worship, as well as to host community events and activities for our youth.
