An arena cover will protect our riders with disabilities from the weather, so that a highlight of their week will not have to be cancelled.
Auckland
NSRDA, which provides therapeutic, horse-riding programmes for children and young adults with disabilities from across the Auckland region, needs a roof to provide shelter over the existing outdoor arena. The Arena is the area where riders learn their skills but in wet or stormy conditions riding has to be cancelled. Even in fine drizzle the conditions could result in illness among the riders, whose health is often fragile as a result of their disabilities. The riders and their caregivers find that, particularly in winter, many sessions have to be cancelled, resulting not only in strong disappointment but in loss of momentum in life-changing therapeutic and social improvements in riders. On hot days riders have to contend with heat and UV exposure. A covered arena will allow continuity of the programmes while protecting the health and increasing the level of enjoyment of riders.
NSRDA Trust manages and develops the buildings and land used by NSRDA to provide therapeutic horse riding programmes, for children and adults with disabilities, across the Auckland Region. These programmes improve physical, mental and social well-being.
Towards the $550,000 project cost. Total cost will be covered through tagged funds, grants from Foundations and Trusts and funding from this page. All money raised will be kept in a fund tagged specifically for the arena cover.
The Arena Roof Is On! Thank you. 12 October 2023
The roof installation was completed over the September school holiday and ‘raising the roof’ took place on Wednesday last week. The newly-covered arena provides us with the opportunity to have year round riding which increases time in the saddle and associated benefits for our riders, resulting in much better outcomes for all. In the past, operating a disabled riding programme that was hampered by storms, wind and rain significantly impacted our ability to provide consistent and reliable access to programmes. The arena development is only possible thanks to our very generous donors; New Zealand Community Trust, Lottery Grants Board, Pub Charity Limited, North and South Trust, Foundation North, and the donations from a number of wonderful private donors who gave via this page.
We provide therapeutic riding programmes to 80 riders, over four days each week. With the unpredictable and wet Auckland weather over the past year riding has been postponed 21 days. Covering the arena has been on the long-term building and maintenance plan for the NSRDA for three years. This plan finally coming to fruition gives our riders a richer experience and means they can ride each week during the term. For some of our riders this is the highlight of their week. They build a special bond with the horses and volunteers and to be able to keep up a consistent riding schedule is just brilliant. Thank you so much for helping us.
Thank you for your generous donation on 24 March. I am sorry for the delay in getting this personal thank you to you. The page lapsed and has now been reinstated which meant I could respond to you. Thank you again. Adrianne Cranshaw, Trustee, North Shore RDA Charitable Trust.
