Evan Vince, of Rawene Volunteer Fire Brigade, has spent 10 years helping people, but now he's battling Cancer and could do with a hand.
Hokianga Harbour, Northland
For the last 10 years our mate Evan has spent thousands of hours, day or night, available 24/7, serving in the Rawene Volunteer Fire Brigade. He has helped so many, saving lives and property, fighting fires, attending car accidents and medical events across Hokianga.
No matter the hour or the nature of the call out, Evan responds. Driving the back roads in cyclones, helping in terrible accidents, working the water pump all night, truly Evan is a local hero who does not hesitate to help anyone in need.
Now Evan is going through a tough time with Cancer. He's a humble man, and at 74 years of age he is one of our 'young fullas' in the Brigade. Although he would never ask for help, he and Shirley have given me permission to put up this page. Cancer effects every part of someone's life and your donation will ease a bit of pressure for Evan and Shirley.
I have served alongside Evan in the Rawene Volunteer Fire Brigade for the past 4 and a half years. Evan and Shirley are well known in our community as people who go out of their way to help others with no expectation of anything in return.
All donations will be used to support whatever treatment that Evan chooses, travel costs, and to ease the financial pressures on he and Shirley at this time. This couple lead simple lives and help so many people. Every bit helps, nga mihi nui.
Thank you 17 February 2026
To everyone who has so generously given to me — thank you. Because of your support, I’ve been able to receive desperately needed treatment in my battle with leukemia. My weight had dropped from 60 kg down to 53 kg, and I was becoming quite weak. I’m now back up to my normal weight of 60 kg.
I used all-natural products, along with Vitamin C and ozone treatment. I’m now back on the fire truck, doing my normal job as Pump Operator.
For me, leukemia has been an interesting journey. I had no fear — I simply thought to myself, I’ve got a job to do, and with all the help I was given, I was able to do it.
Thank you, and may you all receive the many blessings I have.
With love,
Evan and Shirley
