Eyes on Joel’s Tomorrow - Help Joel Return to Living Fully

$14,758 of $15,000 goal
Given by 136 generous donors in around 3 months

This fundraiser is about helping Joel rediscover his independence, one step at a time.

Canterbury

Joel, a 28 year old, who's life was forever changed by a medical emergency that no one saw coming. After being diagnosed with a colloid cyst, a benign tumor in his brain, Joel suffered a stroke that dramatically altered the way he navigates the world. One of the most profound impacts was the sudden loss of his visual ability, making everyday tasks feel unfamiliar, daunting, and isolating.

Joel now has cortical blindness (tunnel vision), ultimately effecting his peripheral vision, Joel can see roughly 10-15% of what he used to be able to see.

Before the stroke, Joel was working as a builder, loved hunting every chance he got with his dogs and always enjoyed a beer at the pub with the boys. Now, each day requires immense strength to relearn even the simplest routines—from moving safely through his home, to cooking, walking outdoors, and engaging with the world around him.

Unfortunately Joel's application with the Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust was declined at Ministry level. This organisation is dedicated to restoring hope and function for people with acquired brain injuries. From occupational therapy and mobility support, to routines that foster confidence and autonomy, this program can make all the difference in Joel’s recovery.

Your generosity helps bring light into Joel’s everyday moments and gives him the strength to keep moving forward. Every donation is a vote of confidence in his recovery—and we are grateful you’re part of his story.

Hello Everyone,

We’re thrilled to share that Joel has officially begun his rehabilitation journey with Laura Fergusson. He’s already set meaningful goals and is embracing this opportunity with incredible determination and hope. The coming months will be pivotal, and we’re excited to see the progress he’ll make.

Joel is deeply grateful for this chance and is committed to making the most of it. None of this would be possible without your generosity and support. Your donations have not only opened the door to recovery but have also reminded us of the power of community and kindness.

From the bottom of our hearts—thank you. We feel truly blessed to have you walking alongside Joel on this path.

Our biggest thank you,

Joel and Abby
