  • Update for 16/04/2014

      16 April 2014

Well it's been a busy couple of weeks at Felines Friend. We have finally finished building the new outdoor play area for the cats. My special thanks and appreciation go to Stephen Coleman who single handedly built the area and made a secure place for our fosters. The area is approximately 10 square metres of running space. It has wood fences on 3 sides which the cats love to climb on and view the world. There is netting over the top with some roofing coming and concrete to roll on. The forth side is our house. There is a cat door leading to their inside area which was developed from a bedroom. There is also a tree to climb outside with plenty of leaves to play hide and seek with, balls and toys on the floor and a picnic table and chairs. Soon there will be climbing platforms and roofing so they can play outside in all seasons. There is a double layer of gates which makes entry and exit secure. The cats have been playing in it for about a week and are loving it already. Boundig around and rolling in the sunshine and tree climbing seem to be favourite exercises so far. They are also learning the cat door which will be great for keeping the room warm in winter but still allowing those who want to play outside the freedom they would like. Inside are cat beds and cat tree and also isolation crates for newcomers. This is also where they eat their meals. 3 cats now have homes. 2 6 month old kittens have been adopted and Max who is fiv positive has also been adopted into another home with an fiv positive cat. We still have 4 more cats in the shelter waiting for new homes. You can read about them in my previous posts and there pictures are available on our site. Maria is feeding 13 cats at 5 different locations on the streets right now and we want to help her bring them all in but we will need your help to do this. Please if you could spread the word to everyone you can think of so we don't miss possible home opportunities we would be very grateful. WE are trying to advertise our presence everywhere we can think of but word of mouth is a very powerful tool so we thank you for your help here also. Although the shelter is now built we are in debt to cover what we have paid out so please do keep donating. WE really appreciate your support. Please feel free to call me any time and ask about the cats we have so far. Call auckland 8337934. Thank you and purrs from Felines Friend.

  • Our current foster catsUpdate for 26/03/2014

      26 March 2014

It's important to tell you about our fosters we have right now.So here we go. Peter is a white neutered male cat about 4 years old. He is affectionate and playful and full of natural curiosity about the world around him. He seems very accepting of other cats and people too. He loves to play ball and wrestle with his friends when they allow him too. He's always first to greet us and first at the food and cannot resist checking out anything we are doing. Since white cats often have hearing or sight problems we have checked and he is fine with both. He can't wait to stretch his legs in the new outdoor enclosure. He has been with us since late January and would be fantastic for a family and is very likely to thrive in a busy household as long as he is allowed to be in the centre of everything. Grady is a charcoal grey and white neutered male, about 1 year old. He has a very loud purr and a snuggly nature. He asks to b picked up and snuggled close a lot. He settles well with new people when they visit and so we think he will adjust well to a family. He's a little more cautious around other cats but is good at giving them space and he too is looking forward to playing in the new enclosure we are building which will have plenty of room. Grady also likes heights and watching action going on below him. He has been with us since early February. Tabitha is a Tabby speyed female about 3 years of age. She's very gentle and quiet and a little shy when you first meet her but is responsive and purrs to thank you when you feed her or stroke her. She would do well in a quiet home with no young children and would be best suited as an only cat. She is ok with the others but tends to get pushed aside and hides when she feels insecure. She's very sweet and gentle though and is looking for a peaceful life. She has been with us since early March. Tomas is a tabby neutered male, about 3 years old. He has only been here for a day or two and is already a strong character. Although he arrived scared he quickly settled in and can tell us exactly what he wants. He's very affectionate and talkative and cannot seem to get enough attention right now. He's a very big cat and has a big character to go with his size. He's quick to tell other cats that he wants his own space but is not a bully He'll do very nicely in a family home where he can get lots of cuddles and food. All these cats have been living on the streets for quite some time and were being fed by a kind person until they could be trapped and brought in to help them. Each one has needed individual attention and love to allow them to develop their characters. I put them on there own to begin with and then slowly intergrate them in with the others. They are all healthy and have good appetites. So please pass the word around as you may know of others who could support us financially or give a home to one of these darlings. We'd adopt them all ourselves if we could but we already have 6 house cats of our own. There are more cats waiting to come in already but we can only take so many at a time and we have pledged that these cats will stay until they find good homes. So we are desperately seeking your kind help for these needy animals. Thank you to all who have helped so far. We need all the support we can get. Whatever you can do to help is greatly appreciated. Some people donate kitty litter and food too which is always welcome. Of course though our favourite form of help is when a cat or cats is adopted. We've been doing this now for 25 years but only recently have we had a spare room and are able to build an enclosure. Before we had to integrate cats and kittens in with our own pets which causes stress all round as anyone will know who has done this. We will be posting photos of all these cats shortly.
