FVP, led by medical/nursing students, exists to supply healthcare, water tanks, and medical supplies to Fijian Villages.
Auckland
As one of 17 New Zealand medical students, only 3 of which are nurses, I was selected to participate in the Fiji Village project in January of 2023.
I am super excited to be immersed in the Fijian culture from a medical perspective. In my position of privilege, it is my duty to help, educate and provide healthcare for people who are more disadvantaged than I am.
Learning to work in a hospital setting with few medical supplies will give me a more holistic perspective on thinking and doing things.
One of my mentors explained that we will be taking part in at least 5-10 births a day, which is not something that we as medical students or professionals get to experience unless that is what you specialise in.
It will be an exciting opportunity in which I will be exposed to a variety of healthcare diagnoses that are similar to NZ but at a more extreme level.
The Fiji Village Project is an international, not-for-profit, student-based public health humanitarian project established by medical students from Australian National University, Fiji School of Medicine and University of Auckland.
My goal is to raise $2500, including a minimum of $750 for the implementation of the program and the remainder for travel and accommodation.
Without this essential care, the Fijian health system can't experience the same reach and level of care we take for granted daily in NZ.
