This week the Bula Coffee staff have been busy putting more food parcels together for the Novosa district. This area is in the remote highlands of Fiji. Some of these villages are only accessible via river crossings.
We have been in contact with the local Dismac (disaster management) office to arrange food parcels to get to the villages in most need. The government has been aware of the needs of these villages but has not been allocated any resources to assist them and won't for another couple of weeks as relief efforts have been concentrated on the areas completely wiped out.
Dismac have been very grateful for the food donations and have assisted us with the use of government vehicles to get the food up the valley. Because of the food packs that we have been doing, local businesses have been inspired to either drop off food directly to us or do the same and get food parcels to other areas.
So far we have been able to provided OVER 850 people, in 7 villages, one settlement and a few other smaller groups of people with enough food to eat for a MONTH!
This week we will be getting seeds up to these same villages that are fast growing to help them restart their crops to ensure they have an ongoing food source.
The villagers have been so grateful for the food as many had completely run out of food and others were surviving on eating rotting cassava (making a soup out of it) and killing the few bats that were around.
None of this would have been possible without the generous donors from this Give A Little page and the Bethlehem Baptist Church community, so for that we cannot thank you enough!
