In addition to raising funds to replace the predator traps lost in the recent funds, the Ashley Rakahuri Rivercare Group invites people to join a river-clean-up from 9.30am, Sunday 25th July. The floods have swept a lot of rubbish into the river and we're organising teams to clean it up.

Volunteers must RSVP by following this link: https://forms.gle/kW2D4snUfK3CJ8Ui9

Volunteers will be organised by team leaders in 4WD vehicles with trailers. There will be skips in meeting areas for rubbish collection.

The terrain will be tough and overgrown so volunteers must be physically fit and eager to get a little rough and dirty!

Please bring your own thick gardening gloves, gumboots or sturdy tramping or work boots, water bottles and sensible clothes for the weather and terrain.

The meeting area is: Rest Area on the Northern Bank

of the Ashley River SH1 Bridge

The day: Arrive between 9.30am-9.45 for a Health and Safety Briefing. There has been some hazardous waste spotted around the river so please make sure to attend the briefing especially if you're bringing your children along.

Clean-up starts at 10am and will run until 1pm.

  • Lots of work to do to get our traplines restored

Wow! We continue to have great support from the community for our appeal for help after more than 100 of our predator traps were washed away by the recent flooding in Canterbury. In addition to our Givealittle campaign, publicity about the event has resulted in donations of cash and material from individuals and community groups.

While we continue to appeal for funding toward building new traps, we are also on the hunt for traps in the river as they are sturdy and some will have survived the deluge. The photo with this article shows one of our DOC200 traps that has been found amongst the food debris and mud. Any traps found will be cleaned and re-serviced for ongoing use.

There's still a lot of other work to do too. Each of our 27 trappers will have to relocate their trap lines. Then our GPS operator will reset each trap's GPS location, then map and photograph the whole line.

We'd like to thank all of the donors to our Givealittle appeal for money to replace predator traps we lost in the recent floods. We've received many donations, such as a very generous donation of $200 from Lesley Ottey of Eco Educate (pictured).

Lesley does a great job throughout Canterbury educating people, schools, groups, businesses and so on about how to live more in a more environmentally friendly way, helping organisations with reducing waste, recycling and raising awareness of how people can help the environment in their daily lives.

We've also received gifts of traps or trap construction material (more details to come), meaning we are well on our way to our target of $5800 in cash or kind to replace all of the traps we have lost to the floods
