Flood victims - Mum with terminal cancer and son with Down Syndrome evacuated from their flooded home, many belongings destroyed
Auckland
Our Mum Catherine is currently living with terminal stage 4 Gliobastoma. In early 2021, our mum started losing her vision and within a week she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She has undergone brain surgery, radiation and chemotherapy but nothing has helped. She’s lost vision in her left eye and now suffers short term memory loss, along with many other symptoms that make day to day life a struggle.
As a single Mum, she devoted her life to her three kids, and still cares for and lives with our younger brother Oliver, who has Down Syndrome. She wants him to be able to live with her as long as possible so they can treasure the time they have left together.
After the toughest two years battling this awful disease and with increasing concerns around her financial situation the worst has happened.
Mum’s home flooded in the recent Auckland floods and she and my brother had to be evacuated. With the home unlivable in the long term and many belongings destroyed we are wanting to help ease the financial burden they are under to provide essential care and a place to stay until their home is safe to live in and they can continue enjoying the time they have left together.
Whilst Mum does have home insurance, there are going to be many extra costs such as accomodation, replacing essential items straight away and the ongoing costs of Mum & Oliver’s care (along with placement and care of Mums dog & cat) due to Mum being unable to work.
Catherine is our Mum, Oliver is our brother.
Accomodation, replacing belongings and continued care for Catherine & Oliver.
Thank you all so so much! 2 February 2023
To all the incredible friends, family and strangers who have donated to help Catherine & Oliver, we are so humbled, grateful and overwhelmed with your kindness and generosity. Catherine and Oliver are safe, dry and in the best of care, and knowing that so many kind humans have reached out to help has lifted them up and helped them through this awful time. Please keep them in your prayers. Here is a photo of our courageous Mum (and granny to these two crazy kids) a few days after the flood being smothered in love by her grandchildren. Xx
