It is with deep sadness that Speedway New Zealand acknowledges the passing of Alan “Moon Goon” Luoni – a true stalwart of our sport and one of the great characters of the speedway community.
Alan’s involvement in speedway spanned more than 45 years, much of that dedicated to governance and leadership. He served with distinction on the Speedway New Zealand Board for many years.
Alan cared deeply about grassroots speedway – the clubs, the volunteers, and the drivers who make our sport what it is – and he was a tireless advocate for their needs.
Beyond his governance role, Alan was renowned for his unbelievable sense of humour. He had the rare ability to bring laughter and lightness to any room. He never minced his words, but always did so with a smile and an energy that made people want to be around him. Alan’s service to his home club at Oceanview, his support for the Warriors and Vulcans, and his dedication to the wider speedway community reflect the breadth of his contribution. He was not only a respected leader but also a much-loved friend to so many.
On behalf of Speedway New Zealand, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Alan’s wife Tracey, daughters Sea-jay and Shauni, and his extended family. Alan will be deeply missed, but his impact on the sport – and the joy he brought to so many – will never be forgotten.
