Napier City Council plans to demolish the present Onekawa Aquatic Centre and build a new Aquatic Centre at Prebensen Drive, at a cost to the ratepayer of around $50 million.
The Onekawa Aquatic Centre is close to many schools, community groups, shops and so a central community recreational and commercial hub utilised by the whole community.
The Prebensen Drive site is a long way from schools, community groups and shops. It will not be central, without the ability to become a community recreational and commercial hub.
‘Friends of Onekawa Aquatic Centre’ has been created to make the Napier City Council consult properly about the planned closure of Onekawa Aquatic Centre.
Council has not consulted properly, and has even ignored a 7000-signature public petition. It has ignored overwhelming, and well-presented arguments at two public meetings, and also at a Special Council Meeting, where six of the twelve Councillors demanded that the Council re-think the Prebensen Drive plan.
This is the Council’s largest capital expenditure plan ever!
Councillors have been deadlocked at 6 for and 6 against, with only the Mayor’s casting vote allowing the plan to proceed, against the advice of half of his own Councillors!
Friends of Onekawa are seeking legal intervention through the courts that Napier City Council halt current tender process to build multimillion-dollar facility at Prebensen Drive and re-consult all key stakeholders, including Napier community, Iwi, schools and businesses on sustainable affordable options, including developing the current Napier Aquatic Centre at Onekawa.
