A Congolese poet and humanitarian forced from his home by war — your support keeps his voice and Bel Avenir’s work alive.
Auckland
Justin Shukuru Mulindwa is a Congolese poet , law student, activist and co-founder of Bel Avenir — a network of youth who provide much-needed supplies and food to women and children who are victims of war living in displacement camps in Eastern DRC.
His words carry the weight, heart and hope of a people. Through his poetry, Justin bears witness to the lives of those lost, displaced and in crisis due to the ongoing genocide at the hands of M23 rebels - foreign backed militia and the relentless pillage of Congo’s resources — cobalt, coltan, gold, and diamonds — resources that power the world while destroying his homeland and exploiting his community.
In early 2025, Justin was forced to flee his own hometown for safety. Many young activists including Justin’s own relatives have been unalived or are missing. Away from his family he is now resettling as a refugee, navigating displacement while continuing to hold his vision for Bel Avenir and community.
He needs our support for his university fees and basic necessities including food.
Janina Nana Yaa (founder of Nyame Dua x House of Afi) has had the honour of collaborating with Justin on his poem Mawa Mpe and Echo of Hope, bringing his voice into our creative practice. ‘His work moved us deeply and we could not stay silent about his circumstances.’
