Fundraising for "woven" PhD research

My name is Diana Albarrán González, I'm a PhD candidate in the School of Art and Design at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in New Zealand (Aotearoa), and mother of a 7-year-old daughter. I’m researching collaborations between artisans and designers in a field called Artisanal Design, co-design and ethical consumption.

Part of this research takes place in Chiapas, Southern Mexico, the place where I was born and raised. My commitment to this research goes beyond me, it is interwoven with the stories of an amazing community of Mayan weavers called “Malacate Taller Experimental Textil”. This group of strong women with big hearts imprint their culture and stories through their textiles, teaching that life is woven collectively and lived in community. Together, we have the commitment to make visible the stories, meanings, processes and culture of their Tsotsil and Tseltal heritage.

One of the biggest challenges I have faced during this research is funding limitations. I support myself financially in part through my work as a part-time lecturer, and in part with a Vice-Chancellor scholarship I was blessed to receive from AUT. Earlier this year, I applied for research funds to the National Funds for Culture and Arts (FONCA) in México (similar to Creative NZ), and I was selected for the quality of my work (results here). However, the rules changed this year and I was required to carry out a procedure in person in less than a week. Unfortunately, due to lack of resources for the flight and a short period of time, I was not able to attend leading to the loss of those funds.

To continue the research, I must travel to Chiapas again in October, but it has not been possible to finalise it due to lack of funding. Pulling from the learnings from this amazing group and the importance of the collective, I want to summon the power of community asking for help to raise funds to make this research possible. The first piece is a Quexquémetl (sort of triangular poncho), and the second is a textile centrepiece for tables. Both creations are handmade in backstrap loom weave, taking months for their elaboration. I will post pictures of the pieces, as well as a brief explanation of the meanings and processes behind them. The winners will be randomly selected on October 12th but the pieces will be delivered after I collect them (to be arranged). I will keep this space updated with new information as pertinent. Also, all the donors will have a special mention in the "Acknowledgements" section on the thesis as a token of my appreciation, and to show the importance of the collective.

Mi nombre es Diana Albarrán González, soy candidata a doctor en la escuela de Arte y Diseño en la Universidad Tecnológica de Auckland (AUT), Nueva Zelanda (Aotearoa), y madre de una niña de 7 años. Estoy investigando sobre colaboraciones entre artesaños y diseñadores en un área llamada Diseño Artesanal, co-diseño y consumo ético.

Parte de esta investigación toma parte en Chiapas, sur de México, lugar en el que nací y crecí. Mi compromiso con esta investigación va más allá de mí, esta tejido junto con las historias de un grupo maravillos de mujeres mayas llamado “Malacate Taller Experimental Textil”. Este ejemplar grupo de fuertes mujeres con gran corazón impregnan su cultura e historias a través de sus textiles, enseñando que la vida se teje colectivamente y en comunidad. Juntas tenemos el compromiso de hacer visibles sus historias, significados, procesos y cultura de su herencia Tsotsil y Tseltal.

Uno de los mayores retos a los que me he enfrentado durante esta investigación es la limitación de fondos. Parte de estos vienen de mi trabajo como profesora de tiempo parcial, y otros de la beca de la Vicerrectoría de AUT. A inicios de este año, apliqué para fondos de investigación a través de la beca del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) en México, misma que fui seleccionada por la calidad del trabajo hecho (resultados aquí). Sin embargo, los requisitos cambiaron este año y era necesario que acudiera en persona en menos de una semana para aceptar la beca. Desafortunadamente, no pude viajar en tan poco tiempo y por falta de fondos.

Para continuar esta investigación, debo viajar a Chiapas nuevamente en Octubre pero no ha sido posible concretar por la falta de fondos. Haciendo uso de los aprendizajes de este gran grupo de mujeres y la importancia de lo colectivo, me gustaría convocar el poder de la comunidad y pedir su ayuda para juntar los fondos necesarios para hacer continuar la investigación. La primera pieza es una Quexquémetl (como un poncho triangular), y la segunda una pieza textil centro de mesa. Ambas creaciones están hechas a mano en telar de cintura y llevan meses en su elaboración. Yo compartiré imágenes de las piezas, así como una breve explicación de su significado y procesos detrás de ellas. Los ganadores serán seleccionados aleatoriamente el 12 de Octubre, pero las piezas serán entregadas después de ser recogidas (por definir). Voy a mantener este espacio actualizado con nueva información como sea pertinente. De igual modo, todos los donadores serán mencionados en la sección de “Agradecimientos” en la tesis como gesto de agradecimiento y para mostrar la importancia del colectivo.
