Help us unite two projects benefitting youth wellbeing!

Wellington

Two projects focused on improving the wellbeing for young women are joining forces.

This GiveaLittle page has been set up to support two projects, that focus on improving the wellbeing of young women, to come together for a special 2.5 day event in Wellington.

Fran McEwen, who co-leads Shift in Wellington, and Jamie Emery, who co-leads Kamp Kaitiaki in the far North, met in 2015 at the Lifehack Flourishing Fellowship and soon discovered their similar passion for improving young women’s wellbeing.

They have been busy in their retrospective areas delivering their co-designed solutions to impact wellbeing and now want to come together to give and support each other's projects and the young women involved.

Together the aim is to raise approximately $600 for flights from Auckland to Wellington for Jamie and two of her Kamp Kaitiaki young women to come to Wellington to attend the Shift Jam 2.0. The Shift Jam is a 2.5 day event held during the July school holiday at the Bizdojo. The Jam aims to teach 20 young women (aged 15 - 18) about social entrepreneurship, start up’s and human centered design through the lens of wellbeing issues that young women face. Ultimately the participants at the Jam have the opportunity to create their own solutions to issues they feel passionate about.

In turn, the young women from Kamp Kaitiaki will be supported to host an Ako session at the Jam where they give back to the Jam attendees - teaching them something they are passionate about. This fits in nicely with the theme of the third Kamp in late June - ‘Give’ (one of the five ways to wellbeing (link), which each of the five Kamp’s are themed around)

If you would like to support the sharing of knowledge, inspiration and friendships flourishing across the county then please consider giving towards this campaign. 150 passionate humans giving $5 each will more than cover the cost of travel, food and accommodation to make this dream a reality.

IF we raise more than the approximate $600 needed we will split any additional funds between the two projects. Funds that go to Kamp Kaitiaki will be used to deliver the fourth Kamp. Funds that go to Shift will be added to the ‘Give back, Shift forward’ fund that young women in Wellington can apply to for removing the financial barrier to participation in physical activity and wellbeing opportunities.

Kamp Kaitiaki (there are a total of 5 "Kamps" in 2015/2016 themes around the Five ways to Wellbeing) was developed in response to a lack of opportunities for youth, particularly those living rurally and from low-socio economic backgrounds. Kamp Kaitiaki offers a safe weekend away for youth aged 12-15 to engage respectfully with one another and co-create programmes and activities around the issues that affect them in the Far North. The goal is to help develop young women who are more connected and engaged in the future community, who can manage themselves, support one another and protect the environment. The first series of Kamp’s target young Maori women aged 14 who live rurally in the Doubtless Bay area in the Far North. This group has been chosen as a focus group to discover information around role modelling and learning engagement preferences with the forward thinking in mind that these young women will be effective role models for girls younger than themselves whom are within our target age group of 8-15 years old.

Shift is a pilot project that aims to increase the physical activity and wellbeing of young Wellington women. It is an joint initiative between numerous funders and support organisations including Wellington City Council, Sport Wellington, the Ministry of Social Development, Lottery Community, Lifehack, Enspiral and Massey University School of Design and many more.

Shift focuses on five strategies to improve young women's wellbeing:

Four co-designed 10-week programmes around physical activity and wellbeing delivered in secondary schools in Wellington.

The development of groups of female Shift leaders who will be mentored to champion physical activity and wellbeing within their schools and communities.

A vast increase in fun, social, low cost community-based physical activity and wellbeing opportunities on offer in Wellington – targeting young women aged 12 – 20 years.

Money crowdsourced through PledgeMe had enabled a fund, ‘Give back, Shift forward’ to be established that young women can apply to to remove the financial barrier to participation in movement opportunities in Wellington.

Shift Jam’s - 2.5 day opportunities provided to empower young women and teach them about social entrepreneurship, start up’s and human centered design
